By your definition, if I use a set of doubles on a recreational dive, one of them is just a very big pony.

I sling a stage, a deco bottle, & on the very rare occasions I use a pony, I sling that too.

I use a stage to extend bottom time. I use a deco bottle to accelerate deco. I use a pony for those times when it all go's to pot on a recreational dive & I need a personal emergency gas supply. It's not how I mount it, it's about how I plan to use it, that changes the definition of the same slung bottle.

In a word, bollocks

If i'm on a single tank rec dive, & I sling a tank that I haven't planed to use for extending bottom time or to accelerate deco, but I have planed to forget about, (except to charge the reg occasionally), unless faced with some sort of emergency OOG situation, what is it?

They're so damn cute!

Now that's what I call genetics gone horribly wrong!

solo divers carry their buddy with them in the form of a Pony...

Pony is the best dive buddy I've ever had!!!

I sling a 40. ( anything below that is useless)

Maybe for you, but for recreational divers a 40 cft bailout bottle is far larger than necessary. 19 cft of air is plenty for any recreational situation. If you truly NEED more air as a bailout in recreational diving, I would venture a strong guess that you're doing something very wrong in planning/profile management. You might WANT more for your own reasons, but saying anything less than 40 is useless is not an accurate statement at all.

The vast majority of recreational divers consider it perfectly safe to dive with a 750PSI reserve, which is just about 19cft of an AL80.

Tech/deco/overhead diving, totally different scenario.

Please tell me why you feel you need a Pony?

Probably for the same reason I buy car/home etc. insurance.......

$*it happens and I would rather be alive than be big balls in an internet scuba board forum......

BTW, I am picking my 19 cf tomorrow.....

Hope you like it.

You can dive your way, I'll dive my way... I'll bet my dives are more fun though! Unless I am in warm water, I have some redundant air source, whether it be doubles, 80cf stage or 30 cf stage.
