Question for all of you gear hounds out there.

An LDS is going out of business, they claim rock-bottom prices - "cost plus", below "key man" (not sure what that means), and better than "Instructor Pricing."

It doesn't mean anything. However if they actually say "going out of business sale" , many locations have laws regarding how long the sale can go on for. In the past it wasn't uncommon to find stores that had been "going out of business" for years.

As for not answering your question about prices, it's either because the stuff is selling great, they don't have much left and don't care if you come in, or because the prices aren't anything special and if they tell you, you won't come in.

If they're willing to order stuff for you, I'd suspect they're not going out of business at all, since manufacturers will usually stop shipping to stores that are closing.

flots.

I was surprised that since they are going out of business, they wouldn't go ahead and post internet pricing on the items that are not supposed to be sold that way...like the Auqualung regs. Even with their "Crazy" or "Dirt Cheap" prices, the prices I checked were better everyday at ST.

Exactly.

I had gone into the soon-to-close store about three weeks ago and bought a compass and wetsuit. Prices were discounted, but nothing to rush for. Figured prices would get better, but doesn't look like it. Nothing changes on the website except countdown to closing.

Just took scubatoys deal to my in-town LDS and they matched. So I'm happy. Prefer to establish a relationship with and LDS.

22% off is no "going out of business" prices. Let's be realistic. True inventory liquidation is 10 cents on the dollar or less. This is nothing more than a sale.

Sounds to me like they are going out of business but trying to have a profit bubble on the way out. 22% off on Aqualung should eventually cause AL to shut them down. But it is probably still a markup of 50+% over wholesale. The sooner they put such prices in their advertisements or even over the phone, the sooner AL is likely to move in and pull their dealership. In the mean time, as long as AL is still supplying them, Why not continue ordering high dollar merchandise and marking it up 50% rather than 100%. If you want some really good buys, check with them again the week their store lease runs out. Or, better yet, look for it on ebay after the shop closes.

Prices may get lower the closer the shop gets to D-Day, but you can't blame them for holding out for as much $ for as long as possible. It's been my experience that by the time you wait until they are that desperate, you will be picking over 'bones', other's will scarf up all the good stuff before that point in time...others will buy things at 22% off, even if you don't.

...you didn't find Aqualung regs at better prices @ Scubatoys, they're NOT an Aqualung dealer.

I found the store. It doesn't say "Going out of business" - it says, "Store Closing"

Big difference.

I didn't go with Aqualung, that was just the ones I had asked about that they wouldn't give me pricing on. The rest had pricing on the web site.

Ok, true... He's choosing to close the store. So, that's a good point.

So, then there's no hurry to sell anything, except that after tomorrow the store will not be open for business. Wonder if the web site will be?
