i dont think there is any question that neoprene is less prone to damage in the conditions you describe.

i have a 7mm oceaner with rear brass zip for sale if interested.
 
I too prefer compressed neoprene for all of the reasons listed above -- and also for the far simpler DIY repair work (neoprene cement, dental floss, Aquaseal) than those of laminates, which frequently involve sending them back to manufacturers, at a premium . . .
