Ok, i don't know if this is in the right forum... sorry if its not.

So, I live about 3 hrs from Gilboa, is it worth the drive to dive there. The nearest quarry to me is a shade under 2 hrs away. Its frustrating to live in ohio and try to dive. I'm open to comments and suggestions.

I have just PM'ed a moderator to have this thread moved to a more convenient area.

You didn't do anything wrong by posting it here, but your question will have a better chance of getting answers in the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew area.

Personally, Gilboa is my regular training area. There is a great deal to play with down there and the owner has full services there. It is about a three and a half hour drive for me, but it is worth it to have a place to tune my skills for wrecks.

Another two options that I am aware of are Whitestar and Portage.

Good luck. I know that we will all have good answers for you!

gilboa is worth the drive. but dont over look portage. i personally like portage better and the viz was far better when i was there last year in July over gilboa. two great quarrys and they are very close to each other. i havent tried whitestar or blue springs yet thou.

Thanks :) I'm also 3 hrs from portage.. The closest quarry to me is nelson ledges at a shade under 2 hours. I tried a quick search on here and found out a reply that called it "toxic" that didn't sound too appealing. Have any of you been to the lakeview quarry? its about 2 hours away. I can't remember if that one is the one my LDS was saying closed to divers or not though. Thanks for your help so far.

Have you taken a look at the Ohio dive site list on the Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers site?

Anyway, Gilboa is a nice site. I can't compare it to Portage or Whitestar as I've not been to those, but my OW and AOW certification dives were done at Gilboa. I'm trying to figure out when I'll be able to get up there this summer.

Gilboa is definitely worth the drive although during the summer on weekends it gets REALLY crowded and the students blow the visibility pretty quickly. If you're going down for the weekend dive Friday evening and Saturday morning, by Saturday evening visibility is gone. A weekday dive is usually awesome since so few people are there. There are all kinds of things to look at and/or swim through.

White Star is nice. We had 40 feet of vis in early May but the next time we went it was down to 15-20 feet probably due to all the rain but I can't say for sure. There isn't a whole lot to see but the crusher building is pretty cool as are the large Perch.

Ber Rabbit,

I'm always looking for a weekday Mon-thurs dive buddy for Gilboa. If you can ever get away, give me a shout, I'm only 50 min. away from there and will be there with the slightest notice. I don't really like the weekend crowds. I really am sociable; I just like diving when I can see.

Whitestar had a lot of traffic over the holiday, so the vis was down a bit. But it tends to be higher than portage. My last three trips, Whitestar has been much busier than Portage on Saturday and Sunday, but both definitely worth the time. Whitestar is less than 30 minutes from Portage, so the 3 are fairly close together.

Thanks for your (all of you) input. Maybe i can steal down there on a monday sometime this summer.

I haven't tried Gilboa yet but will later this month. However, I'm usually off work on Monday's so let me know if you'd like to come up this way to dive. I know how hard it can be to find a buddy on a Monday. I live in Toledo so Gilboa, Whitestar and Portage are all easy for me to hit.
