Only restriction is that the Sheriff has put his own locks on the gate past the piano room. If he has an idea as to how long he'll keep it closed I have not been able to determine. I suspect he's trying to get the fellow who laid the final few feet of line there, who I hear is over on a project in Holland right now, to come see if he can squeeze back in there and check that last little hole. He's the only guy I know of who's both expert enough and small enough to do it.
All else is open.

It's possible that he could get back, but also possible that he doesn't have interest in getting back after the first time. I really don't know who the individual is (I have a guess), but I guess we'll have to wait and see rather than speculate.Ok so lets see here....the guy that has gone the farthest into the cave and was the one who laid the line that goes the deepest into the cave is out of the country. The line is broken back where he laid it.....no other person has been able to get back there...right? Is there not another person that thinks that this guy is capable of getting back there again to visualize that area that the other recovery divers did not get into? If he could get in there once then why is it so unconcievable that the victim couldnt have gotten all the way back there ran into trouble and perished? In the process he was pulling on the line to try and get back out and that is how it was broken...."That last little hole" I for one think that is the final piece to the sad puzzle.

My comment: who are you lurk-n-learn, and what is your agenda? You popped into existence a few days ago, agitate exclusively on this thread, and you don't respond to uncomfortable questions which are posed to you.
On second thought, don't respond - I don't care. You now have the distinction of being person #2 on my ignore list since you add nothing of value. Truth be told, you would have been #3, only I can't "ignore" Eduardo since he is a sponsor.
Well, I've been here 'bout as long as anyone. Of those still posting I think only Walter pre-dates me... Last cave related fatality at Vortex predates Scubaboard... 'twas over a decade ago. Pat Watson did the recovery, and the offending passage was then closed with a rebar grate. There are still three places (my opinion) on the open water side of the gate where a little curiosity could put an OW diver in deep trouble fast... and then there's always that blown o-ring over 300' from the open water that hasn't happened yet... But to say - or even imply - that Vortex claims more lives than other caves - especially on a per-diver-entering-the-cave basis just simply isn't so. The fact that it isn't, considering how many OW divers penetrate the 300 odd feet to the piano room every day, sorta grates on our sensibilities as cave divers, but facts are facts, and on a per-OW-diver-in-the-cave basis Vortex is likely the safest cave on earth.... with 12XXX scubaboard posts, you probably have a greater propensity to recall the information I am refering to...
+1...maybe time to sit back and wait.

He took a SM course, so maybe skills improved after that. Wish we knew the instructor so we could ask them (and also know if it was an instructor who has experience in SM or a PADI 2 day wonder), I think you could be onto something.I don't think it was said that the line was broken that far back.
It will be interesting to see if conditions have changed at Vortex since the time the last of that line was laid several years back and whether he is still capable of getting into it.
Based on the gas plan the victim published on his FB page to get to 800' of penetration, the conditions I've been told regarding the cave, and the skills I saw in the video, I'm doubtful he made it to the end of the line..
I dunno where he is, but at this point, I'll be surprised if he's found back there beyond the reach of those who have already searched.
