I would not try diving out of Galveston during the winter, the weather is not plan able more than a few days in advance. During the late spring and summer weather becomes more predictable. The State sank a nice wreck (The Kraken) about 65 miles out that can be reached on a day boat or the Fling which does 2 and 3 day trips out of Freeport which is the next port down the coast. Despite earlier post shore diving is available in Galveston but only for a few days in late summer during drought conditions. There are the rigs that were mentioned above are being slowly but steadily being removed so you might want to start hitting them this year. There are also quite a few wrecks in the gulf but not many get any action except from spear fishermen.
