Most patients do not have to change their diet post gallbladder surgery. Bile does not neutralize stomach acid, and in normal patients, bile is not present in the stomach to any significant degree. Bile DOES emulsify fats for digestion, but as bile continues to be secreted from the liver and enter the small intestine after GB surgery, most patients can digest fats fine afterward.


OK so if i understand this the liver produces bile as well as the gall bladder?? If so is it a different bile then the gall bladder?

It was the 70s. Hehe, I evem have childhood memories of being anesthetized with ether - with my dad administering it. Things are so much better now.

LOL glad i am having it done the way they do it now.

While you're waiting on that answer from Lynn - I think the liver produces it, the gall bladder is but a bladder, why so named - a storage bag, but the body learns to use the duct for that to an extent.

Well i am gonna try and get some sleep the pain seems to be less then it has in the last week. Maybe i'll get a good nights sleep for a change
 
The liver does produce bile, and I think the gallbladder is like a "holding tank" for the bile that is produced. Your body will still produce bile. In my situation, there was a significant reduction in "heartburn" when diving after my gallbladder was out.

To this day, I still have problems with digesting fatty foods...but as the med mod said, not all people will have that problem.

Interesting thread, thanks all for posting. I will be asking the same questions shortly, as I am in the "see the specialist" phase of testing, with a perscription to see the surgeon. ick. Summer diving season (my most favorite time of year) and the INVASION is coming up. I will do all I can to postpone the inevitible surgery till fall or later! :D
 
Yes, the liver produces bile for the purpose of helping to digest fats. Bile is stored in the gallbladder until fats are detected in the stomach, and then a hormone causes the gallbladder contract and squirt a bolus of bile into the small intestine to meet the food.

In a patient without a gall bladder, bile is secreted by the liver into the common bile duct and into the intestines in a more continuous fashion. Despite the loss of ability to coordinate bile boluses with fat ingestion, most people continue to be able to eat normally. I can see where you could make a theoretical argument for why a huge meal loaded with fat might cause some symptoms, but to my knowledge, nobody's studied that specifically!

Nowadays, with almost all gallbladder surgery being done laparascopically and therefore requiring minimal incisions through the abdominal wall, recovery time is much faster and restrictions on activity are less strict and briefer than they were when I was trained.

I see. My experiences are all anecdotal, of course. I thot cooking with lard was outlawed in the US in the 80s, but after some reading it seems it simply became unfavorable - but is making a comeback in North America and the UK. Hmmmm.

Actually, after that reading - I really don't know why I had problems with lard cooked foods in around 1980? Maybe it was just me or something else I was doing. It's been over 20 years since I had those pains, thank gawd...!!

Jenny, if I remember from 30 years ago, I took some sort of med when needed for over a year to avoid the surgery, but then - I was not a diver then. Good luck to you, too.
 
Thanks again everyone. Lynne that explained a lot thank you. Now i am just sitting and waiting, this is the time that drives me nuts. I hate the waiting game. i just want to get this over and get to the recovery stage already. This is playing on my nervs now.

DandyDon, thanks for the kind words. I keep away from most hydrogenated fats, and non natural products to keep the attacks to a minimum. I have not had meat (except fish and lobster) for the past 6 weeks, and have not had an attack! Hmmm Easter may be painful when I eat a big juicy steak for dinner! (mouth already salavating!!)
