I am wondering if fresh fruits, eggs, meats, and veggies purchase from the grocery store ("Mega") are safe for an American to eat? I don't want to be in the bathroom my entire stay.

Anything in the store I should avoid eating?

Gracias

Just as safe as you would safely handle and prepare those same items in the states as an "American".

If you wash your fresh fruits and veggies in Mexico in the sink using the local water you run the risk of getting the you know whats.

Clean with gasoline, light on fire before eating is best, or just clean with bottled water and Comet, if no Comet available, then just bottled water.

As far as what's good I like loading up one of those bent up metal pastry trays in the Mega with one of everything. You never know what's going to be so-so or awesome by the looks of it, so just get one of each.

By the way, the damn Mayans invented chocolate, you'd think the Mexicans could make some good tasting chocolate treats, but they cant! :depressed:

Every time I walk past the bakery section I fill up the tray with an assortment of baked goods. Every time I am dissapointed by the bland, tastes like crisco, crap that looks good but tastes like fatty cardboard. I thought that maybe it was just supermarket quality and not a bakery, but here at home I tried a local panaderia and it also fell short. Maybe a good business idea for someone looking to open a new business on coz would be a pastry shop or bakery. They say bakers make a lot of bread.

One word: Zermatt (Trust the Swiss....) Just north of the plaza...

Also buy a cappuccino, sit down and they will give you a little basket of them.

Have you tried the chocolate actually made on Coz? And the honey with chocolate in it?

I've had no problems with any foods in Coz. I am very careful with eggs because they are not refridgerated. I usually scramble eggs in morning before dive. Just cook them well and i believe you'll be ok, but no guarantee. Never have cooked them over easy. The pasteries do look delicious but all taste the same, bland. We usually ge the 3 leche cake, very good , and share with front desk worker Maria.

Although some of the food and packaging of it is much different than you would see in the states, yes - it is very safe to eat with the same handling you would at home. Mega is very clean and expiration dates are respected and followed.

The milk is ultra-pasturized, so it is not in the refrigerated section - it is packaged in a box. I refrigerate my milk befre I use it simply because I prefer cold milk. Del meat is very good and always fresh.

Turkey breast = Pechuga de Pavo
Ham = jamon
Turkey ham = Jamon de Pavo

As far as poultry, pork, etc - I only buy in Mega and it's actually very good. Produve is usually very good - although you do need to wash it. You can buy the antibacterial drops "Microdyne" or similar. Put a few drops in a big bowl of water and soak any veggies that you are not going to cook in that. If you are cooking the veggies, just wash them off with bottled water and you will be fine.

As far as water and ice in restaurants - it's ALL PURIFIED and all safe. Not even the locals drink tap water, so bottled water is a part of their life and habits - so don't worry about them accidentally giving you tap water.

Hope this helps - have a great trip!

cvchief, glad to see us agree on something. Kaokao chocolate is awesome. Made by a French girl and her Mexican husband. My favorite is the chile one (in a sandwich with a roll from Zermatt). Can be bought at Coffee Bean (El Coffee Cozumel on Calle 3), Maharaja on Avenida 15 close to Calle 1, Los Cinco Soles on Melgar, or directly at the "factory" (Calle 1 bis sur entre Avenida 80 y 85). They also do tours to explain the whole process of chocolate making. Here's their website : Chocolates Kaokao, Cozumel México

Ah, we just disagree a little about stuff we can't change anyway, right? Of course though the chocolate is coming from a French girl? I would like to see the factory. The missus bought some in the plaza last trip.
