There were many factors that went into creating that Calimba accident, and redundant line would probably not have prevented it. It was a tragedy, and a good lesson on why it's good to be conservative, not only in gas planning, but in other factors related to a given dive. Complexity was probably the biggest root of this one.

Many cave dives are not decompression dives, particularly in Mexico, where the caves are shallow. However, in Florida, it is much easier to get into some mandatory deco, once you are able to dive thirds.

True, although its not that complex a dive at all. The divers and their "guide" (a term I use very very loosely because she set the day up for disaster) made it vastly more complicated than it needed to be. Not only is a second line essentially impossible in that passage and a serious entanglement hazard, those divers also had essentially no situational awareness and even 10 lines wouldn't have done them any good.

Well, thanks again for the input. I see a cavern / cave course in my future, as suggested, to improve my diving. The down side is that I now regret the purchase of my Jacket BC. (At least my DIN Poseidon Reg should still be acceptable :) )
Jokes aside, I can detect how the jacket BC affects my trim and drag (not good...)

Regarding the differences between wrecks and caves. You may get something from this blog entry. It is the text of a presentation made on the topic at the National Association of Cave Divers convention in Gainesville this past November.

Presentation to 41st NACD* Conference. November 21st 2009 Doppler's Tech Diving Blog

Oh, and you are correct in your assessment of the jacket BCD. Sorry.
