The poll results seem to speak for themselves.
Since the majority seem to think it is a worthwhile discussion...
And since the over-whelming majority of those who care to voice an opinion voted DIR...
Main Stream = DIR... Loud and clear....

But what are the voices saying to you?

Hundreds of thousands of Scuba divers. Probably Hundreds in this forum.

38 Pro DIR votes

Therefore

DIR = Mainstream

????????????????????????????????????

You are definitely getting DIRlusional..........:bonk:

The only statistical conclusion you can draw is that most people think that this debate is too stupid to even vote that it is too stupid......

So what am I doing here.......

The poll speaks for itself:

For - 38
Against - 8
Neutral - 45

Dear Uncle,

Since the majority seem to think it is a worthwhile discussion...
And since the over-whelming majority of those who care to voice an opinion voted DIR...
Main Stream = DIR... Loud and clear....

Is this one of those parliamentary tricks.

How many for - 38
How many against - 8

For wins.

How many to make it unanimous - 38
How many against - 8

BY UNANIMOUS DECISION THE WINNER IS:

But what are the voices saying to you?

Hmmm, that's a bit of strech, even for you UP. :)

The poll indicates "It's a stupid argument and I dont care one way or the other." . That's how I voted.

And it is stupid argument. How can one be for or against a personal choice of style that someone else makes? What business is it of anyone's how a person chooses to dive?

I think the for/against DIR debate makes for amusing entertainment.

If someone wants to dive a 25 ft reef with the same diligence and preparation entailed in a 2000 ft penetration cave dive - so what. That's their right. I personally choose to take what I consider to be a minute risk increase and not do so. On the other hand if I was to go on that 2000 ft cave dive, I would probably carry out DIR procedures, and then some, possibly.

If someone wants to call the way they dive Doing It Right - so what. If they want to call everyone else's way Doing It Wrong - so what. Its called freedom of expression. You can either back the talk or be seen as a fool. If they want to dive with their HID cave light on a 25 ft reef in the day time - so what. I just want to know the pro's and con's of this.

I think everyone here wants to be a better diver, and many generously share great dive knowledge. Lets stick to specific discussions about a piece of gear or technique and debate the benefits and detriments of it. This kind of debate can provide us with the type of information we need to make an informed personal choice.

I guess I too would feel pretty cranky all the time if I kept stirring up the bottom and couldn't hold my stops without holding onto a hang bar.

Is this referring to someone in particular ? or just anyone who isn't DIR <?> GUE <?>

And honestly I am really trying to wrap my head around this whole DIR thing and up to this point I cannot offer an opinion either for or against, yet I am not saying I don't care...(yet)

Certainly the full meal deal DIR tech or cave rig and methodology isn't essential for safe recreational 25' reef dives... and I will spot you this one: I personally don't think it is optimal for 25' reef dives.

But...

For those who are committed to using DIR equipment and methodologies to do staged decompression tech dives or cave dives the equation shifts. To keep your skills sharp and your responses automatic many DIR divers will do the 25' reef dive using what might seem to the un-initiated an undue burden of equipment, planning and procedure. This isn't because the dive calls for it... it is because the training goal of the individuals calls for it.

Do recreational 25' reef divers need DIR... no... but they could certainly benefit from some of the skill disciplines. Sorting out what really is beneficial is where the problem lies for many.

One more thing... you have heard me refer to rototillers stirring up the bottom... well on the Internet there are rototillers stirring up the bottom as well. Laden with snippets of DIR (pro or con makes no difference) but lacking both understanding and experience they thrash through thread after thread churning up the discussions with vigor devoid of reason.
