With most airlines, they have a "surcharge" for "sports equipment" so... Don't tell them anything.

You're going someplace tropical? ONLY for Diving?

Bring a MINIMAL amount of clothes (are you going to wear a lot of clothes?)

Pack your BC and Wetsuits in Luggage, and Carry on your Regs/Computers/ and/or Camera gear (if you have any)

Weigh your bags and make sure you keep it close to the limit specified for YOUR AIRLINE. All airlines have different restrictions... If you're changing airlines, or flying a different airline back... check their policy too... ALL airlines have websites, and this information IS readily available on your airline's website.

Good Luck!

Yeah Southwest is currently 50 lbs a bag but you get 3 bags. We just got back from Key Largo and flew into Ft Lauderdale - when we checked in going out and coming back they kept a close eye on the heaviest bag - I weighed it before we left the house - 48 lbs according to them - no problem.

When I started scuba diving I quickly learned to pack a minimally as possible, and to pack as much as possible tightly into a "carry-on" bags.

Many commercial airlines allow you take 2 items of carry-on: one small suitcase and one personal bag (i.e. laptop bag, purse, etc). I pack these bags tightly with as many items as possible, also I put many of the heavier things into the "carry-on". Though they have weight limits for carry-on baggage, I've never been asked to have any of my carry-on weighed on commerical flights, just make sure the bag is within carry-on dimensions. With small regional airlines all bets are off.

Finally, remember there is no need to travel with your weights ;-).

Taca Airlines (flight to Roatan) - they weighed my Carry-On bag... 22 LB (10 Kilo) limit.

Yes... some airlines allow 3 bags. Also, your status with the airline has a factor, or if you're flying in First Class, you can check extra baggage. I am a premier member of United's FF club, and I can check 3 bags on every United flight...

bubblemonkey:
hopefully this is the right section....

i know alot of airlines allow golf clubs onto flights not as part of your 20-25 kg weight allowance, but what about scuba?

me and my Mrs will be going away this time next year for roughly a 2 year dive trip, obviously this includes all warm water dive gear plus all the usual gumpf you carry when travelling (me personally not alot, her quite alot LOL) so i am a bit concerned.

what do you guys do?
where you off to? philippine airlines i know for a fact has a special allowance for sport travelers - golfers, surfers and DIVERS (weee!!!) included

it's like $15 to be a member for a year or something and they give you like an extra 20kg (i think)

hope it helps... and make sure you don't have to bring tanks where you're going... eats up soooo much weight hehehehe

Jag

cheers all its not my weight allowance i am concerned about as i am a seasoned traveller and will take virtually nothing with me, its the other half and all her potions and creams and clothes that she doesnt seem to be able to leave at home....well i suppose it will be her lookout at the end of the day if she is over she will have to pay.

last time we went to s/e asia for 9 months she was carrying 10kgs more than be on the way out and even more on the way home.........

Hi there,
I see you're in the UK, so there a couple of things that the US does differently over here than in the UK.

If you're travelling through the US, you'll be expected to leave your bags unlocked once you enter the US baggage system. This is to allow the TSA (aka...not even going to go there, but you can find the threads) to inspect your baggage in the "interests of security".

Two suggestions for this situation: keep your valuables, computer/reg in your check in luggage; see if they have "TSA" approved locks in the UK. The TSA should be able to unlock, inspect and then replace the locks afterwards . ( I say should...again you can find more threads on this.)

Also, while accepting bags up to 70lb / 32kg, most US airlines now appear to be charging extra for anything over 50lb/22kg . This of course is variable on how nice you are to the staff, financial situation of airline, time of day, time of month...the usual variables.

..And of course, the classic no lighters, knives, scissors, tools, etc in hand luggage. This restriction has officially been "eased" in the past month or so to allow small tools and small scissors, but I don't think that this has filtered down to the TSA "grunts" yet.

....and finally my last b+tch....Most European Airline still serve free alcohol in cattle class. With US airlines it's usually $5/€5/3GBP a drink.

Other than the above, I hope you have a good trip. Dive safe and have fun!!

I was soooooooooooo tempted but was expecting someone to divert the tone

...Thanks for not disappointing;)

PS I just hate that negative buoyancy thing at 37,000 ft.
