Last weekend I was doing some last minute snorkeling/freediving before I had to leave Cozumel. It had been about 22 hours since my last scuba dive. I had about 6 dives down to around 20-25 feet which did not seem all that deep. My dive watch in freedive mode reset my no fly time to 23 hours. I did not think the free dives would be included in the fly time calculation. Is it safe to fly within a few hours after some minor freediving? Thanks

Flying after diving is only a problem if you've been breathing compressed gas (esp nitrogen) at depth, resulting in that gas dissolving into your blood and needing to be off-gassed before taking a flight. No compressed gas at depth, no problem.

Given the freedives you've described, I, too, would classify them as "minor" freediving, (assuming reasonable bottom times of about 2 minutes per dive), and I wouldn't think twice about hopping on a flight home within a couple of hours.

However, if I was doing more typical recreational freediving, such as 60'-90', with bottom times of roughly a minute to 90 seconds, (and maybe a dozen dives) I'd be waiting 18 hours before flying. DCI from freediving appears to have a greater bias towards Type 2 hits, something I'd really try limit my chances of!

All the best, James
