Zeeman:
Did he die?

Z...

No, he didn't, it wasn't an explosion , it was a 02 fire, that started by the tank that supplied the 02, which was in the garage. The tanks he was filling was outside.
One mistake was , he had the tank that supplied the 02 in the garage, and when the fire started , he couldn't get to the tank, to shut it down to stop the 02 fire.

I don't want to speculate, as I only talked with him yesturday, ( Monday) when i found out, I didn't wan't to pry to much into what had happend.

I'm sure the local Fire Marshall's will look into it, who are the professional's, and come out with a report.

I think the original statement was a little inflamatory. I really see no problem with mixing your own nitrox as long as you know what you are doing.

I'm also not seeing the precise cause of the fire based on the pictures or evidence that the AL bottle in the picture burst before or during the fire so I see nothing here other than speculation. If a fire started "by the O2 tank", it still does not address the ignition sourse, it just speaks to O2's ability as an accellerator for a fire once a seal, hose, etc was compromised by or in the presence of a fire.

I do agree boosting O2 does not make much sense given the risks involved. You can use a cascade system to get save more pressure for topping off the tank and if you need more gas, you can use a larger deco bottle. 50% and 70% mixes require much less pressure in the O2 bottle to mix a full deco bottle without a booster and they are often a better alternative to 100% O2.

Agreed, and I don't know where or how the fire started, so I'll leave that upto the investagation to the Fire Marshall's.

He wasn't certifed for breathing , or filling 02, , for deco, or the rebreather ,so the local dive shop's would fill his tanks for his converted CCR Dolphin for 100% 02.

That is one of the reason's he got a booster off Ebay

That was also the reason he " Pumped " up the PST steel tanks 100 CF so when we took trip's down to the Key's, he carried a 100cf PST Steel tank, pumped upto 4500 psi, and used a transfere whip, to transfere it into a 13cf tank, that was used on his CCR rebreather.

That is why at this time, I can only go by the past in my experiances with him, and from diving with him in the past, and trying to help him see the risk that was involved with filling pure 02, and that he was taking, with the little experiance he had in diving, etc.

So I don't want to speculate here, as I wasn't there, and just found out myself about the fire, but I will try to answere as accuratley as possible.

Keep in mind also, he is still a friend, all though I'm sure he willn't be diving again

Sounds like someone needs to dust off the "Darwin Award' for a future presentation.

Geez! Maybe an intervention is in order........

One reason why you shouldn't fill your own NITROX Tank - especially if you don't know what your doing.
This is a TRUE Story and happend 22-May-2006.

There's more to come on the story about this person!!
It may be a few more days til I get the rest of the story and some more DUMM stunts that this novice diver did!
Garages to bedrooms is common in Florida
Nope - didn't see it in the local paper either@

George, was it in the paper's ? If so what day? I'd like to read it, see what they said

I've got a better nomination for the Darwin award that I witnessed.

I stopped at the local Walmart gas station to buy gas. Apparantly someone had over-filled their tank and spewed gas all over the concrete pad where you parked. One of their employees was out there putting out "kitty litter" type stuff to assorb the spilled gasoline and sweeping it back and forth with a push broom to assorb all the gas....

It was then I noticed a cigarette in his mouth with a long "ash row" on it ready to fall off into the gas soaked kitty liter at any time....

My wife asked why I got back in the truck w/o buying gas (as I left quickly). I'm surprised that I didn't see a report of him dying on the evening news that night.

Marco:

I just found this thread. Sorry to hear about David's house. As you know, I followed your thread last fall and was very supportive of your efforts to curtail his "high risk" behavior. As expected, it finally caught up with him. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Please let us know what details you find out.

In hopes of "remembering the good times", here are a couple of photos from the last time I was diving with you guys:
