More favorite memories & shout outs!
Most of all, I loved the diving. I've told some of you - I was retired involuntarily in April. I was notified in October, and continued working (keeping my termination a secret because making it public would have hurt people who weren't involved in dumping me). But it was rough - and focusing on this trip got me through the 5 long months between between the termination and my (publically perceived) retirement. The trip did not disappoint - even though I brought an unwelcome guest home.
In addition to the diving -
Loved the lunch iquana!
Loved finding a great local scuba repair person!
My computer was infected by poltergeists last week. It happens to nearly every computer I touch (just ask my former IT department). The poltergeists finally found my dive computer. Despite having a brand new battery the Thursday before the trip, it was flashing the "low battery" symbol on Monday morning . . . then it cleared before diving. But since I didn't want to take a chance I rented a backup computer for Monday's dives. It worked perfectly during the dive! So I figured it was just a quirk.
Then on Tuesday, the low battery light was flashing, again. One of our members (sorry I don't remember who - but thanks!) gave me a fresh battery. That was fine for the day.
Everything appeared normal the next day. I did my ever first nitrox dives and - despite apparently allowing me to set the proper oxygen percent - the dive log shows my computer "thought" I was diving air on both dives.)
So Lynn and I did a bit of internet research and found a promising local repair shop, and took a long, hot hike over to his shop to see if he could help out. We arrived just a few minutes before he closed. The shop was filled with more pieces and parts to repair scuba gear than anyplace I've run into in Ohio There were two locals who had dropped for a repair - and they strongly recommended the shop. Javier (the owner) did what he could - pulled it apart, blew out any dust he could find - and it appeared to be working. Unlike during my dives, when I set the oxygen % to 32%, left the screen and returned, it held the setting. Javier was cheerful, helpful, called a taxi to get us home, and charged me nothing. So if you run into gear failure on Cozumel - you should check out
Cozumel Scuba Repair - Javier Polanco.
(Unfortunately, Javier's magic wasn't strong enough to overcome my poltergeists. My computer worked normally on dive 1, but died before dive 2. I've got an analog spg and depth gauge . . . and acccess to tables, so missing my computer didn't kill my dive. But I don't like diving that way aside from an emergency.
Which brings me to the next shoutout. On the last day of diving, I was able to borrow one of the two
Shearwater computers loaned to Scubaboard for the trip. Nice spiffy computer! Loved seeing the depth graph in the log! Probably a bit above my price range - but if you've got the money to spend it was intuitive and easy to use. Very easy to see underwater! More bells and whistles than I'm likely to use in my lifetime!
I'm looking forward to my next trip - with
Reef Divers Dive Resorts - likely before the end of the year, thanks to the $500 gift certificate I won! (I'm open to suggestions as to which location and time of year.)
Not sure what Lynn will find to spend her $25
Divers Direct gift certificate on . . . but I'm sure I can give her some gift ideas
