Anyone know what type of Abalone are farmed? In San Francisco most of the Asian fish markets sell live Abalone. They are kept in tanks and seemed rather small, around 4 - 5 inches.

As a kid I remember finding quite large (at least they seemed so at the time) Abalone shells all the time at Monarch Beach.

Edit - Oops, this was supposed to go under the Abalone thread.

Thanks Kelpmermaid! That was interesting!

A few months ago I came across a website for a company that farms abalone in Mexico and sells over the internet. It made me curious whether it is a sustainable aquaculture fishery, and whether I should try it or pass it up. Never having tried abalone, I decided I am better off (or the abalone are better off) if I don't know what I am missing. Sometimes ignorance is bliss!
