divebutt:
Hi all,

My LDS is running a trip down to FI in early April (price can't be beat)
If you can go there in Sept/Oct they offer a very cheap package deal. roughly $579/pp with 3 boat dives/day, unlimited shore diving, room and meals.

Hi all,
Diving is not included in the package (to allow for flexibility for scheduling which trip you want). I understand the prices are 35/55/75 for a 1,2, or 3 tanks. Are these fixed or are there discounts based on bulk purchases? You know, 5 days of two tanks.....
Thanks
I would think that their normal (almost) all-inclusive rate would be a better deal for you. Check that out on their website.

Also, how is the dive staff during the dive? Guided and you must stick with the guide, or can you go off and do your own thing?
The DMs generally will let you do your own thing but it's good to stay close enough t them that you will see the critters that they spot.

Anything to add?
The dive sites are typically 5 -15 minutes away with a few a bit further so returning to the dock is not a big deal. You do the SI on the rides in/out and on land as opposed to sitting on the boat. When they go out the the furthest sites they do them as a two tank dive.

FI has a nice beach for lounging (take lots of bug spray high in DEET!!!) I found the rooms to be spacious, clean and reasonably appointed (mini fridge, TV, dresser), and the food pretty good.

Anyone been to FI lately have they upgraded there safety deposit boxes (safes) when we were there 2 years ago it was a bit of a joke little wooden cupboards in a room beside the front desk only about 1/2 of them were even operable ? Realy didnt give me that warm fuzzy feeling !!!

Yeah, same room, but with metal boxes. Seemed ok to me. Better than leaving averything in my drawer...

We just got back from FI last Sat. Travelled with Nolitours direct out of Toronto. It has been one of the best trips ever I have been on (and I've filled a passport or 2!) hands down.
They charter West Jet for the flight. It is the saving grace.
The dive packages are booked directly through FI's US office - 5 days, 2 tank=$240 USD. They offer an 5 day, 3 tank pkg as well as 8-day packages. Each extra dive is $28 USD. Night dives are counted as a dive, so plan for extras - you won't be sorry.
Unlimited shore diving is included with the packages. it's very convenient- just tell them when you want to go and be at the dock with your gear. they'll bring you a tank and dive you 'round the corner in the little boat. Then they come and pick you up when you call.

Most of the sites are less than 10 min from the dock, and you see other resorts dive boats moored outside too, so it's not as if they're just using the sites 'cause they're close and they save fuel. It makes great use of SI time - go back and have a hot shower (right on the dock, to fill your suit!) or get a snack or more layers! Just enough time to change tanks and you're off again!
The good thing about this is that you can choose which dives you want to do in the day . you can do the 2 morning or 2nd & 3rd, or 1st and 3rd. or all three! its completely up to you.
They really do cater to divers, and no the DM's don't hover unless they think you need help. My partner got her OW referral done last week and then she joined our boat of instructors and DM's. the DM still watched her out of the corner of his eye even though there was plently of qualified and experienced divers hovering.
Food was OK, 10x better than anything in San Andres, even for me with a shellfish allergy. every meal there was a choice, even on seafood night I was happy. Gourmet it's not, but no one should be surprised when you're paying $1100 (incl. ALL Canadian taxes).
I would have to say it's the best diving value going.
Sure beats 5 days in Bermuda - double the price and $130/2 tank dive (incl taxi fare!), and the wrecks are in 35' of water.

I guess you can tell I loved it!

Were mosquitos a problem? We will be at FI from Jan 27/07 - Feb 10/07. Were they more of a problem on night dives? We (family of 5) will be doing a night certification course.

Postponing my trip to end of Feb due to work.

How are the rental equipment at FI? My wife will need to rent her gear down there. I know you can book the diving thru a shop here in SW Ontario (London, I think), but can they arrange the gear rental too? Any idea on the cost?

It's on their website.

Their gear is quite servicable. Is she XSM or XL? You may run into a problem with BC's if she is an XSM, wetsuits if she is XL+ Same would go anywhere, for men as well.

You can always rent locally back home.

When TACA didn't deliver my gear for 3 days FI loaned me enough gear to dive I was able to borrow a computer from another instructor. The gear was fine, not the best but useable.

Hi all, thanks for the help. One other question, how're the bugs/weather/water temp/viz that time of year?
