Exactly. Students may be more comfortable there but that's not the best way to dive (vertical or on solid ground). We need to get them used to and comfortable with something completely different.
I don't know how many can generalize and how many can't. As an instructor (inactive right now) I want to see that they can do those skills and manage those problems when they're diving that wall with no bottom. They may or may not know it, I know it but I want to see it. It don't count if I don't see it.

They won't be able to maintain neutral buoancy at all. This is why it's more practical to sink to the bottom, over weighted, and just breath through a reg the first time. Do a mask clearing and reg recovery...while on their knees. THEN, teach them the right way.

Full disclosure here. I don't like SD. I am not sure that I am a great guy. Bob is only a troll when he steps into a thread and calls me names which he sometimes does. LOL
In all seriousness, and there are witnesses, I know Bob casually, we've dived together only once that I recall, he doesn't owe me money and he's not on my payroll. In addition he is some one who has put some serious effort into his diving, dives with some great divers, he's occomplished in the water himself and to have some one with his diving background speak well of me makes me feel like....well, all touchy and feely like a democrat.

Either way, you of course can vent in 4 ft of water and even if they don't maintain neutral buoyancy to start off, kneeling UW is hard and it's a wast of time learning it because it doesn't have anything to do with diving.As I said before, I think the important thing is that you have them doing skills in a real diving context before it's all over. I can't argue every teaching method because I haven't tried every one and all the good ones I have are those I blatantly stole from other instructors. I haven't invented a single thing related to diving.
Believe it or not, mask clearing and reg recovery are two of the very skills that I think are often taught completely wrong. You do not need to look at the stars to clear a mask and you don't need to do it in one breath and the last thing you want to do is to take BIG breath in preperation to clear it. The first thing you should do if you do lose a reg is grab your backup...and not start blowing bubbles while you practice yoga. All you need under water is something to breath. Get the air and then solve whatever other equipment problems you might be having.

Not serious about which part? That I feel like a touchy feely democrat? or that democrats are touchy feely? Oh well, better just go ahead an throw the crap because by the time this all over I'm pretty sure I will have earned it some how.
