One other question to ask. What is the typical tank you guys dive. I'm just starting to get into the tech diving and I can get a good deal so figure I would take the steps into properly getting the gear.

That's a whole new can of worms. It depends on:

Shore dive or boat dive. Obviously 72's, 80's 85's make more sense for shore diving.

What's required? What does the dive dictate you use?

What's the rest of the team using?

Cold water with a dry suit usually means steels are better from a ballast perspective.

What's available cheap? (Usually not the best criteria, but face it you will have multiple sets of doubles if you stick with tech diving)

My advice is to find a smallish set 85's or 100's maybe. Starting out with 130's is just more work, and you won't need the gas for a few years anyway.

When I dive in the east coast it pretty much always shore but I get out on a boat once in a while. An 80 usually is good for that as getting in and out of the water with surf is really hard. Also no one I dive with there uses more then a 100. But when I dive in Ohio I usually carry a 100 and a 40 pony. Many of the people carry a single HP120 or doubles. I asked my instructor what he carries and it's usually LP 98s and sometimes HP119s

If your question is "What tanks for singles now and I'm looking to dive doubles in the future" My answer is a little different.

Pick tanks with a future.

S80 (luxfer) can become stages.

85's, 100's 130's can become doubles

Tanks like the faber hp 120's (~-7 lbs empty :shocked2:) or HP 80's (too short) aren't reasonable candidates for doubles.

Good Luck,

Tobin

That was the answer I was looking for. I'm looking towards the future. Looks like 100s. One last question do you guys like the evolve or the explorer better. I was talking to my instructor and he said that the evolve 60 is a little tall for 100s.

I would suggest that you delay your choice of doubles wing until you **know** what exposure suit and tanks you will be using.

I'm moving back from Europe in July so since I sold off all of my tanks but one AL80 I figure I would go for tanks. Also there is a great deal going on for wings that is why I want to jump on this. That is the only reason which I'm a little punchy. :p Plus I can't wait to start diving again.

There's always deals on wings, and buying the "wrong" one will always cost more than getting the one you need the first time.

That's funny -- I haven't had any problems floating my doubles with my 40 lb Deep Outdoors wing (that's with LP72s, LP85s, and HP100s). I suppose, if I were diving bigger steels with cave fills, things might be different.

My wing is slightly undersized, and I dive a FredT X-Long double thick plate.

Its hard to say no to $100 USD... but yeah I know what you mean.

I use a 40# wing w/ my twin AL80's (for open water) and a 60# wing for my twin LP108's (for cave). I was told by a few GUE instructors to go w/ the 60# wing for the steels due to the weight PLUS the fact that I may need the additional lift when adding multiple stage bottles (not there yet - but in the future). In terms of tanks, I guess I'm at both ends of the spectrum so there really wasn't much doubt. I suppose twin 100's are sort of in the middle. However, when in doubt, shouldn't one just go with the bigger wing? What's the downside?
