Important news for owners of PST Cylinders

(DNW) – The US Department of Transportation yesterday renewed the PST cylinder permit 9791 through the year 2018. Many industry members had been concerned about this permit expiring due to the large number of PST cylinders currently in use in the dive industry.
According to officials with PSI-PCI, who spoke directly with the Associate Director at USDOT, the permit has been renewed. Had the permit not been renewed, all cylinders marked with that specific permit number would no longer have been authorized for use and would have needed to be immediately removed from service. The USDOT action today eliminated that situation.

It's supposed to keep deviations from DOT specification standards to a minimum. Lots of money, time, and arguing to make a single standard.
By charging for renewable permits, manufacturers are more likely to be consistent under the one standard for tank making and the DOT can better regulate.
If they chose to make their own special thing that deviates from the DOT specifications, they have to put in for a permit because:
1) First time around to certify it meets equivalent to the standard
2) Renew because DOT wants money

Bureaucracy, basically.

Given the cost of keeping track and the cost of employee time the permit renewal would have to be fairly expensive to make that work.

Anyone know the cost of renewing such a permit?

PHMSA wanted it changed to 1000 for renewal but the NACD lobbied to block it.

I was actually interested in buying a PST tank, but am having second thoughts about it due to these permits.
Does that mean that after 2018 these tanks will be rendered Expired? Or could the permits ever be renewed again?

probably renewed again. i own 7 pst tanks and dont worry
