Might I suggest taking a look at the mbsub hand helds (golemgear.com) ? They're not quite a cheap ($) as the Dorcy's (of which I have no personal experience) but they're very high quality German lights....sometime ya get what ya pay for ! I do put my $ where my mouth is, over the last 3 months approximately, I've ordered $ 2200 worth of mbsub lights (3 delivered, 4th due in very soon from Germany) and I wouldn't spend that kind of $ on crap lights !

"Not quite as cheap" -- are you British, by any chance? You should be, with that level of understatement - $220 vs. $48 (Piranha) i.e. 358% more, certainly is "not quite as cheap":D

I've checked all 4 of my lights and all are the same. Not nearly as bright as the 180's and all have the "donut" type hotspot with a dead area in the middle. Battery holder appears to the be same. All will be returned.

Before you do, any way you could take a side by side beam shot of one with a 180 and post it, so we can compare?

He might be a wee bit too busy for photos right now, he's leaving for Coz in a couple of days. :)

The Dorcy is definitely not a "crap" light. While I was disappointed the new light was not brighter it's still a fine light. The small msub lights are meant as backup lights and unless you're into some extreme diving I don't see the point of spending over $200 for a backup light. The Dorcys are quite fine for recreational primary or backup lights for most purposes.

Unfortunately I'm don't have time right now. This week is unfortunately booked to the hilt after work and I still need to finish packing/double checking before we leave Thursday morning. I won't be sending them back until after I return, I'll try and do it then.

Hi Adam,

In the vent you missed this recent review here on SB of dive lights, here's the link:

http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/lights/325736-mb-sub-x1-vb-3c-test-mark-chase.html

The mbsub lights aren't just backup lights, they are more powerful than the Dorcy's, so if you're happy with the Dorcy's as primaries, you'd love the mbsub lights. So, in my book, I'm buying a primary light for 'over $ 200', which, if I then add, say, a nice can light to my system, the can light becomes the primary and the mbsub the secondary......call the mbsub light whatever you want...primary...secondary....whatever, it's a fine light...very versatile.

Your review of the Dorcy's wasn't exactly 'glowing', but hey, if you're OK with it, and feel good about the purchase, that's fine....I'm happy with my purchases too. I paid more and got more, you paid less and got less...moral of the story, there's no free lunch...we each got what we were willing/happy to pay for...it's all good!

...so, you ordered 4 Dorcy lights and are returning ALL 4 lights ASAP ??? !!! ...not what I'd call a ringing endorcement of the product.

Do you work for MBSUB? Why are you carrying on about the Dorcy lights?

I was going to order two 220 lights tonight, but this review defiinitely put a stop to that.
