I've rented many cars in Cayman. Zero problems.

The whole (potential) car rental crap is one of the reasons I've never been diving in Mexico.
Diving or driving? On Cozumel the two have relatively little to do with each other.

I seldom rent a car on Cozumel. When I do, I use Isis.

One more plug for Isis, but if you do, for chrissake don't cheap out and rent the bargain basement VW bugs that she has for $30/day. I did that on the trip that I just got back from, and holy mackerel- what a rattletrap!:shocked2: They are ANCIENT, & I had forgotten just how SMALL those things are (inside!). It felt like I was riding a motorized skateboard! And then on the second day the gas pedal started sticking!:shakehead: You couldn't get the car to accelerate at more than a crawl unless you really bore down on the pedal, then it would suddenly release and awaaaay we would go! Not too safe in Cozumel's maze of little streets...:w-t-f: Anyway, we limped back to Isis and they apologized all over themselves and put us into the next upward class of car, which was a VW GOL for $35/day. This was more like it! Still no air or auto, but I didn't need those and this felt like a CAR! We drove the wheels off that thing during the week we were there, and got to see a heck of a lot more of Coz than ever before. I knew, of course, that Coz is a lot bigger than the tiny part we usually encounter around the waterfront, but knowing something and actually experiencing it can be two very different things. There is a whole vibrant and surprisingly large city back there, with lots to explore. We found tons of things we didn't know existed. The best torta/taco place I have ever tried is way back on Juarez and 65th, across from the fire station, and called Mr. Taco. Lots more stuff you would never encounter without a car, but that's another thread.:D Anyway, just wanted to toot the horn for Isis. $245 for a practically new VW GOL for 7 days, and that's everything, brother. Insurance included, and you also get Margaretta's sage advice on where to park and what to watch out for. I don't think you can beat it. She does sell out frequently, though, so be sure to set things up with her ahead of time. Woody

Years ago there were tons of the VW "thing" for rent really cheap on Cozumel. They were abused and not maintained. A friend of mine and I rented one, and the first time I accelerated into traffic, the passenger seat with my friend in it rolled over backward into the back seat area. I turned around and went back in for an upgrade. :D

I remember those "things". I don't think it had anything to do with maintenance. I think they did those kinds of things when new.:D

Year's ago, on one of our first trips to Coz, my husband and I rented a beater VW bug from ??? to go over to the East side. When we got there I pulled the parking brake up and it came off in my hand !! When we got back we let the mgr know about his shoddy car and this dangerous development. He just laughed and said "the island's flat, where's it going to go?"

Next time I'm using Isis. If Avis doesn't make this right then I will file a complaint. The whole reason I brought this subject up was to help other divers from getting ripped off. I'm glad we have such a good community... I doubt I would have heard of Isis. I just want an honest deal.

I rented a car from Thrifty and some guys asked me if I was interested in taking a tour of a time share to get the free rental. I agreed and got it in writing. Well when the time came for the time share I went to this BEAUTIFUL hotel that was amazing! I went in sit down and the guy started talking away as I was looking around I really never heard anything he said. He then asked me what kind of payments I was looking for and I said "Well with the bankruptcy I........" He simply stopped me in mid sentence and stamped my rental receipt and motioned some girl to escort me out. I was really upset because I wanted to see this beautiful resort but none the less I had to settle for 5 minutes or his talking and a free weeks rental car. Oh the agony!!!!

Dang! Wish I had thought of that! Several years ago we did the same thing when Park Royal first opened. Our offer was for a jeep for 24 hrs and a bottle of tequila. We ended up spending nearly 2 hrs in there! Every time we said "no" they handed us off to a more high pressure salesman! We finally got out with the rental voucher and the crappiest tequila I have ever had! (Poured it down the sink!) Your idea is pure genious!

You will get an honest deal from Margarita at Isis. However, you do need to see if her vehicle offerings meet your needs.

Yeah, the site shows a limited selection on smaller, no-frills cars. Does one still have to take a van from the airport to their office...??
