I'm,too, am beginning to wonder whether or not BP/wings are really more streamlined that a typical BI or jacket BC... less cluttered potentially... I guess. But does this really impact streamlining in a significant measurable way?

It seems like I glide further on a single kick in my Mack V than anything else that I've owned. But is that just in my head? Where is the objective evidence?

I'm thinking Don has a pretty good point.

Besides, there are many many fantastic divers that use a standard BC and I'm sure that they have their mind on streamlining just as much as any BP/wing wearer.

I have yet to see a BC that allows me to carry reels, 3 lights, a stage or two, and deco gas as well as a BP/W.

Have you?

Don Janni:
It's easier to keep good trim with a backplate when you must carry additional lead because of thick neoprene and those silly AL80 tanks. Humm, so if your not wearing thick neoprene or a silly AL80 and don't need extra weight a jacket can be pretty streamlined. That is what you said isn't it?

Streamlining and trim are two different things to me. Trim is attitude in the water (horizontal position) and streamlining is not having crap dangling and/or a configuration which creates drag.

I can have good trim wearing a 77 lb. wing with doubles, but the wings are not streamlined and create drag which causes my SAC to increase, but at least I'm moving through the water in the proper position. I couldn't do it with a Sherwood Luna.

Stephen Ash:
... and your point is?

My statement which Don Janni quoted did not mean this:

Humm, so if your not wearing thick neoprene or a silly AL80 and don't need extra weight a jacket can be pretty streamlined. That is what you said isn't it?

His interpretation of it. My original statement merely said that a BP/W makes it easier to achieve the proper trim, or horizontal position in the water, even when you must put additional air in the wings (including a whole bunch of it!) because of your equipment configuration.

Sorry... my question was for Perrone. We all know you can carry more crap with a plate and wing. But how does that relate to the question of streamlining? Or does it?

Does to me because it allows me to carry all that "crap" in a fashion that keeps it as streamlined as possible.

The BP/W for *me* and my uses, is a superior system. If someone else prefers a vest, or a horsecollar, or two milk jugs, good for them.

...Done.

That I believe is a point DonJanni is making - you are looking at two different purposes. If you compare a diver in vest who is "streamlined" to a technical diver who is also "streamlined" the vest diver is going to come out ahead ...

Here's a pretty streamlined shot of Uncle Pug in a bp/wing (unfortunately it's a front shot, not a profile.. doesn't give the best view for this purpose) - the major streamlining over the pic Don posted is not in the BC choice, but the placement of gauges, regs and hoses.

I wish I had a picture of Charlie99 in the water as he is very streamlined with a vest - well thought out - it would give a good comparison shot of 2 solid divers who have chosen 2 different gear configurations.

Aloha, Tim
