PerroneFord:
Does to me because it allows me to carry all that "crap" in a fashion that keeps it as streamlined as possible.

The BP/W for *me* and my uses, is a superior system. If someone else prefers a vest, or a horsecollar, or two milk jugs, good for them.

...Done.

I agree with what you are saying. To tote all that stuff ya gotta use a wing. Don would agree with that, too.

But he's making a point that a jacket or back inflate CAN be just as streamlined as a wing given the right BC and the right configuration. He's NOT saying that a standard BC is a wing's equal when it comes to technical diving.

Have we decided if you can acheive as good of trim in a jacket as in a BP/W?

We don't want to let this thread die. :D

Exactly... I even was trying to be controversial but it seems that I didn't get anyone's attention!

I've seen both jacket and bp/wing divers with excellent trim. However I've seen more bp/wing divers with good trim. Possibly because those leaning toward that type of gear config (small group still) are "fanatical" about the technical aspects of diving like trim etc. Or possibly because it is easier for a new diver to acheive good trim in a BP/Wing ... or a bit of both ...

Then again I could be making a very feable attempt to keep this thread alive with yet another Hijack ;)

Aloha, Tim

Streamlining and trim are two different things to me. Trim is attitude in the water (horizontal position) and streamlining is not having crap dangling and/or a configuration which creates drag.

I can have good trim wearing a 77 lb. wing with doubles, but the wings are not streamlined and create drag which causes my SAC to increase, but at least I'm moving through the water in the proper position. I couldn't do it with a Sherwood Luna.

You are right! I understand the difference and I misspoke. I said trim and I meant to say streamlined.

Is there any data to support the claim that wings have less drag than vests?

I think the claim would be made that the harness and plate has less drag than the vest because it is more streamlined. Having better trim reduces drag.
