How far a drive are these from New Smyrna? I was checking them out on line with a group called DiveDaytona. Not to dive with them per say, just to get info one the springs. They look quite interesting! being use to the Northeast's limited vis. on a lot of days, I can't get over the clarity! Bob

Roughly 3 hours to get from New Smyrna over to the Crystal River area. About an hour to get to Alexander Springs, about 30-40 minutes to get to Blue Springs.

Hey Costi if your down from the frozen north and want to hit Alexander let me know. I went over the weekend it was great no one there and alot to see. (No bathers to run off the fish water temp. 73.)

You may want to check in on Blue Springs if you choose to go there, the manatees should be gone by that time in Feb. but if there are any in the head springs you can't even get in the water. Alexander's nice though, went there for my first dive after getting certified.

you say there are no manatees in march at Crystal river?

Thanks for the invite. It looks like my planned Feb. trip needs to be rescheduled but maybe I'll look you up when I get closer to knowing when I'll be down. (Probably won't be until Fall. Oh well, time to start the new year out right and get wet up here I guess.
Also, thanks for the info Scubafool. Either Alexander or Blue Springs sound doable from Smyrna. Crystal River area sounds a bit far at three hours, but I don't nind an hour or so drive from where I'll be staying. After having reread your post, I did read it right didn't I that Alexander and Blue Springs are an hour or so from Smyrna? Or was you saying an hour from Crystal River area? Bob

I don't know about Crystal River, they were still there this weekend when I went, but they usually leave Blue Springs by March.

The offer stands when ever you want drop me a line. Did you say you were going to get wet? Does your 1st stage have a port for a jack hammer so you can get to the water.:D

Yes, you understood correctly. Remember that for either of these springs, no fills or gear rental is available, so you will need to bring everything.

Post back to this thread when the dates get closer, maybe we can get wet together.

Actually, we have had avery mild winter to date with several lakes such as Sebago not expectef to freeze over this year! That will screw up a big annual fishing derby fundraiser.
On one lake in particular, I have seen several ice fishing shanties with no way to get to the because the shores opened up!
Colder this week though tonight it is 19. This morning the ocean was 39. Air temp was around 30 most of the day. I'm thinking about bringing my collapsible ice shack with propane heater to set up at the beach as a warming hut. I'll check in with you when I come down. It is inevitable.....gotta visit the mother in-law. Rooms are cheap and the food is good. now if I could get her to clean my gear! See ya, Bob

Diving off Daytona is probably just ok at best on a good day. You might want to consider taking a drive south to West Palm Beach tho where it's a major improvement. You'll see live coral reefs unlike Daytona......for you the drive is about 3 hours or a bit less but would be well worth it! It's drift diving....I can explain if you've never done it.........
