Just wondering. . . . How many divers actually keep a dive log? I assiduously fill mine in, but as I've spoken with other divers, most of them say they don't bother.

If you keep a log, what do you write in it? What information have you found to be particularly valuable to refer to later?

I download my dives into my PC and add in stuff about what gas I used, equipment, weight, SAC (when I remember the #'s), type of dive if there's something special - i.e. deco gasses, skills practice, etc..., who I dove with and finally - I add a note about anything noteworthy about the dive (sometimes just - "Nice dive" or "got cold") especially if I had some sort of problem or aborted the dive. Someday I'll print all the pages and put 'em in a binder so I have a hard copy...Maybe...

I started keeping a log about 2 years ago. I mostly use it to note route descriptions and occasionally some info for navigation purposes.

I don't keep a log, but I do keep track of the sites I visit,

I'll make a rough map of the site and note landmarks, depths, and such. Anytime I find something new at that site (like a Moray hidey-hole or something) I'll add to it.

Otherwise I keep track of very little ... I'll also make note of "learning experiences" ... in an effort to minimize how often I repeat mistakes.

ayup... i sure do. i keep the old fashioned (paper) kind.

i dont' have anyone sign them or authorize the dive or whatever. i just do it for my
own reference (oh, i remember THAT dive... that's the one when... etc.)

I keep my paper dive log book up to date---very interesting to go back and reread the information--it brings back a lot of memories. I put a lot of detail in the log. ie about the location, what I saw --- fish, coral, etc or if wreck dive about the ship and its history etc. I record the temps, time of day, vis etc. Also I back up my computer information after click of death last August and losing my hard drive and a lot of data that I had not backed up.
An AZ diver.

I fill out my log for each dive and note tips, experiences, unusual or usual sights/sealife, and the usual depth/gas / vis/deco vs non-deco/etc. It's a great way to keep track of your experiences.

I keep a log to remember the great sites and times I had diving those sites. And for later, higher training levels.

Quite a while ago, I used to only log those dives that were unusual or "liability-incuring" (students).

Now that a lot of operations (and divers) seem to be "number counters" I log them all.

Plus it's nice to have records of those tough to find locations, temps, etc.

All the best, James
