I've started wondering lately how many operators in the Caribbean ever have their fill air tested, or for that matter - how many in the US?

I spoke with my LDS today - great follow services, but forgot to ask if they do - and could I get a copy of the results? But then, I hardly ever breath their air fills.

I saw the recent test results on the M/V Spree out of Freeport TX recently, and of course they were admirable. Wouldn't it be nice if all Ops posted theirs out front. :thumb:

My LDS has results posted at the fill station.

That's one of the things that I find curious about some folks. They will blindly buy air fills from an LDS, but yet they question air fills that come from Fire Depts. Our air is tested quarterly, and meets or exceeds Grade E standards. I've seen a few LDS's, on the other hand, that I wouldn't buy paint gun fills from. If it's a concern, by all means ask. I can understand if they won't give you a copy of the results, but if they won't at least show you, run away as fast as you can............

Should be a SOP

There is a filling station at a major dive operation in the Caribbean, staffed by an affable chap who enjoys smoking cigarettes while filling Nitrox bottles. Forget the potential fire/explosion....wonder if that cig smoke is being packaged??

I would rather not identify the location...; just be aware of the filling process and quality of your air.

I fill my tanks at the fire station. It's seldom used because the trucks have compressors on them for the SCBA tanks that they use. The inspection sheets are posted by the compressor. On the road you have to take your chances. I can just imagine that after spending a couple thou on a diviing trip that I'll refuse to use the OP's bottles unless I gag when I try to breath from them. Life is tough, live it.

Looking at a piece of paper, all well and good.

Better to look at the compressor operation and understand what you are seeing. I don't care what paper they have, if I see something that I have been trained to suspect, I'm gone.

I recently saw an air fill station that was drawing air from inside a room that was also being used to repair ATV's. Yes, that would include minor odors of gas and oil as well as an occasional start-up test. You do the math. The air might test okay, but what was the thought process that created that set up?

This is not rocket science. You can learn a lot about air fills just by a little reading and a lot of looking. Ask questions.

Bottom line: If you can taste it, that would be bad.

Our shop posts the air test results right by the fill station.

I sent an email request for a copy of the most recent results to a Caribbean resort recently. They didn't remember when they may have done one - not in the last two years anyway. :11:

I doubt that most small shops test regularly. (quarterly).

why? I think that some of them know they will fail as often a lot of shops have old military surplus compressors that have known oil leaks in them.

I know my LDS tests I think quarterly, or more often if they think they have a problem, but they don't put up the results on the wall. (However they will show them to you upon request).

what amazes me is that I've seen someone leave our LDS before (which has a nice quality compressor system) and drive to the next town to save a $1 per fill and get their air filled on a Korean War relic compressor that has questionable air quality. Heck, they waisted more than that in gas money in their car, much less time.
