Hi Everyone with ScubaBoard,

Am looking for advice diving, not only swimming, with humpback, likely in Tonga as I was told it's one of the few places available. Any recommendation of resort, dive shops or live-aboard? Much appreciated for your sharing.

Cheers,
A

Hi Soy Alex!

You are correct. Tonga is one of the only places in the world where you can swim with humpback whales. For operators, you can check out Dolphin Pacific Diving or Fins ’N’ Flukes. You can also take a look at our information on Tonga’s dive sites and weather averages for more information.

Something else that might be interesting to you is that you can get in the water with humpbacks on Sri Lanka’s east coast. Many of the dive shops around Trincomalee can help you arrange such a venture. There is also a new liveaboard, the Sri Lanka Aggressor, which will take snorkelers and divers on a full 7-night whale tour around the island. If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

I did the Tonga trip in 2012. They will let you get in the water and snorkel with the whales, but you can't dive with them because the males, who often escort mothers with calves, sometimes take bubbles as a sign of aggression. However, if you go diving and a whale happens to come by, that's a different story. I cannot describe the incredible feeling of the humpback whale song vibrating through your body when you're in the water.

Great thanks for the info. Sure will look up for options available.

Cheers,
A

Cheers Scubajelly! Yes exactly that's their song I have been long dream to listen. Did you see them easily or just by chance? Which month you went for your Tonga trip?

I was onboard the Turks & Caicos Aggressor for the humpback migration to Silverbank Marine Sanctuary in Feb 2014. We had about 30 minutes with a singer. I was just talking about how you could feel the sound throughout your body just today as I'm looking at a Sri Lanka trip. Our singer was approximately 40 ft directly below us and mostly stationary, only slowly surfacing to breathe before descending again. It was amazing. Feb is apparently a very good month to go to Silverbank. Humpbacks everywhere you looked.

Thanks DiveTheGalapagos! Heard the Aggressor fleets are good. Been researching for trips for whales but not ware of the Dominican Republic. Cheers!

So you heading to Sri Lanka for whales soon?
