Its pretty cold up here, is diving year round or is there a season? and if there is a season when does it stop? And does anyone know the closest, most convenient diving establishment from MSU campus in East Lansing?

I usually dive lake Michigan until the iceburgs close off my boat ramp. After that its all inland lakes through the ice. Thats where the going gets tough as its alot of work to do a proper ice dive. Hard to get volenteers even with cold beer and hot chili in the offing.

Inland lakes with a chainsaw or something like this.

After many years of using chainsaws I found something new (well, really old) that did a better job. If you can find an old-style ice saw, they actually do a better job than a chain saw. They are longer than the typical 18" chain saw. You don't have to keep starting them with a pull starter. They don't keep stalling out or flooding themselves with water. They don't slosh water all over the top of the ice. They don't pollute the water and ice with oil. And, finally, they are almost as fast at cutting through the ice. You can sometimes find ice saws at antique shops around areas where there are lakes where ice used to be harvested for refrigeration.

Up in the UP where my folks live, they've found an easy way. You just wait for a troll (that's somebody dat lives below da bridge) to drive out on the ice where it's a bit too thin . . .

You cut through ice to dive? Now thats just plain scary, do you realise how cold ice is? I am shivering thinking about it.

I really want to do a nitrox course before spring break, anyone know a good LDS that can help me out? To complicate the matter I do not have a car so transport is somewhat of an issue for me, so the closer the better.

You could try ZZ Underwater in Lansing. They are located on Michigan Ave. just East of Sparrow Hospital.
