The basic rule for ALL divers exiting a boat, is to have a well developed "Plan B" to get home. The interesting thing about Plan B it that it cannot have boat your are getting off of as part of the route home.

Sometimes the only viable answer is a PLB. This is especially true in cold water and far from shore.
Off the SE FL coast "swim to the beach" usually works until you get north of the Lake Worth/WPB area.
In the LA oil patch the next rig down current is your way home, for most of you anyway. You'll leave a lot of your skin on the barnacles climbing onto the rig from the water.
