Looks like they're predicting some surf this weekend. If you believe the forecasts, Laguna looks like around 4-6 ft, and bigger stuff in LA County.

The best bet looks to be The Slot (Corral/Escondido in Malibu), but it sounds like viz there is still poopy.

(Here's the deal on "the Slot": http://www.saintbrendan.com/cdndec03/Slot.html )

Sounds like a good weekend to take the kids to Raging Waters. Unless conditions improve a lot...

I was in the water @ Shaw's Cove yesterday with a student and echo your sentiments ... the red tide is in heavy (probably due to the 66 degree water and all the nutrients from the winter runoff), with foam all over the cove. It was like diving in coffee, with 3' vis until we got below 30', when it opened up to a lovely 5' - 7'!

Yeah, even Laguna Sea Sports describes the water at Shaw's today as "Kahki" :D Must be an alternate spelling of "ka-ka".

Interesting how that happened in just the last couple of days, since viz was pretty good this weekend. Apparently on the New England coast (Maine to Massachusetts) there's also a red tide, and it's a disaster for the shellfishing industry.

Me no like red tide. Make it go away.

Yeah, I'd say wait until Friday to decide where and if you're going to dive. The surf forecasts from yesterday have already been scaled back a bit.

So you're saying that for my first intro in so cal waters- perhaps i should wait????

I've never waited to dive, and never regreted it, but I'm addicted to diving, have my own gear, and I don't live east of LA,so that changes the equation alot.

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone got out to Shaw's today or know of an update on the conditions there this weekend. I plan on going there for the first time tomorrow, Saturday and really want to get in the water. I havent had a chance to dive for 6 months and want to ease back into it, so I'm thinking Shaw's Cove will be a good way to do that. I have to get wet tomorrow or it may be another month til I can! AHHH!
I've checked at least 3 surf sites and it didnt look like it was going to be bad. They mentioned a swell starting tomorrow but it would be bigger on Sat. night and Sunday. But reading this post is starting to discourage me from making the 1.5 hour drive. I'm gonna go but if anyone has an update, I'd like to mentally prepare for it!

Thanks!

Claudette Dorsey (HBDiveGirl) has a dive marathon planned for tomorrow morning at Marineland. A contingent from San Diego may show up and have a tailgate party in the parking lot. Depending on conditions we will make as many dives as you can stand. Gates open around 8:00, but sometimes earlier.
