Catalina is looking fair to middling... 20' vis reported today by several divers (yes, I know we are spoiled rotten). I'm skipping getting in until Sunday or next week when the temp is supposed to be sizzling topside!

Thanks Lexy- I've bookmarked that page. I don't mind 8-12 feet viz- it's when it's 3 feet I get a little bummed. I'm going for it!

Since I've never been to Shaw's, maybe someone else has an opinion on kayaks? I was thinking of bringing mine out as an additional fun in the sun toy. I heard the steps aren't too bad there but maybe someone else knows better.

Great pics scottfiji! I love the one shooting up through the kelp and the swell shark eggs. very cool.

Yeah, even Laguna Sea Sports describes the water at Shaw's today as "Kahki" :D Must be an alternate spelling of "ka-ka".

No Jim, that's Canadian slang for "Crystal clear and perfect for Jim McCabe to dive in!" ;)

get down below the muck and we have about 40 ft of vis in the canyon right now, its just really dark

Reports from the dive park yesterday (Sat) were still around 20' with worse conditions below the thermocline. I've stayed dry this weekend (and last weekend and...).

Is that 40 ft of vis in Redondo Canyon or La Jolla Canyon?

Reports today- vis from 20 to 35' depending on who you talked to. Black sea bass sightings as well. That does it, I've got to buy (or steal) a golf cart so I can haul my gear down to the park and resume diving!!

I went to the dive park last Saturday (6-11) and saw three adult Black sea bass and 2 Juveniles that looked like large black Calico's. The larger ones were so Docile that when I settled into the sand 8 feet or so away one swam over within two feet and just stayed there until nudged by another one and they both took off. This was the first time I saw one up close. The viz was about 25 last weekend and somewhat less below the thermalcline (about 55' - 60'). The thermalcline was obvious by the sudden, significant drop in temperature! Also saw a fried egg jellyfish in hte park.

Dove Heisler Saturday- definitely not a good diving spot that day!! The surf was pretty mild, but that was about the only positive thing during the entire dive... The water was a lovely thick green pea soup with a guesstimated 3-5 ft (at best) vis. The surge was pretty unpleasant as well.. Someone in our group said "when the surge is more than the vis, its just not a fun dive"... lol... We called it after 30 min- the vis & surge weren't worth the effort.
Tried Shaw's today & was pleasantly surprised with the conditions.. The surf was fairly calm & the vis was around 10-12 ft (better than I was expecting).. The surge wasn't unbearable & there were lots of critters around- tons of spanish shawls!

Hope the conditions will improve soon...
