Simple and easy is not how I would describe anything that takes 12 steps.

Try and write detaled one thing at a time steps in how you deploy one - It's totally different in person or displaying it underwater.

I keep the smb detached from the spool initally because I like to use different smbs - I use a big orange one up North, a yellow one in the park normally, a orange one in the park on rainy days and a little pink one if we are GPS marking spots - I could use just one but what would I do in my spare time?

Since attaching them seperately, with the six foot smbs, you don't have this big blob clipped off - and the blob is really big if you are using a reel... I think that lowers the chance of a clip coming undone as I used to have them come undone all the time and now they never do.....

To each his own.

And I don't trust double-enders. They are convenient but I've seen the gates of bolt snaps get bumped open in certain situations and double-enders are doubling the gates.
I use a couple of them but I don't put one anywhere where it would cause a major problem if it accidentally opened.

This and using the reel/spool for other purposes like laying down line are the main reasons for keeping the SMB and reel/spool separate. I don't have that need so I keep my SMB and spool together. Yep - it's a little blobby, but less task loading should the need to deploy arise. I try to practice once or so per trip but I'm still not very good at it.

laying down line?

I call BS on OP.
I'm not calling BS. We were there a couple of trips back, fishing in bad weather. On our way out we passed a boat in an area that was closed. The boat was circling looking for it's divers. Likely they were paid to dive somewhere out of bounds and didn't want to call in when zero visibility came on. We circled looking for bubbles don't know they outcome. So I've seen lost divers in that south area way out.

You can use a spool to run a short line between points. When we were running day charters we often visited a Liberty ship and about 30 feet north from the bow was another wreck. Problem is viz was often just 20' so I'd run a spool line for the divers.

In a cave?

The 2 posts above are examples of what I was referring to. I personally leave mine attached, but when I was researching how to rig one up, these examples came up.

I use a ball bearing swivel with a large coast lock (Bass Pro) on my line so if needed I can swap bouy's. This also helps keep the line twist to a minimum. I have a large rubber wrist band tied just below to secure the line to the spool and the bouy attached in a single package Typically I will have a spear with lion fish on it and I can just tug the bouy and line free from the spool while deploying it. (I run my arm through the spear band and let it dangle while deploying)

Twisting can be an issue. When I release my SMB the line reels off my finger spool without twisting but as I wind it up hand over hand on the way up it gets a twist every time it goes around the reel. After a few deployments the twist accumulates, so every few times I use it I remove my SMB from the line and unspool the line behind the boat while it is under way to untwist it.
