Years ago I saw a DM send his computer up on a SMB in the middle of a dive.

I also dove with a couple who came up from the second dive with their displays flashing, which they thought was because both (rented) computers were malfunctioning. I told them that they had skipped a deco stop and were locked out for 24 hours; they asked me what they were supposed to do for their afternoon dives. You can't fix stupid.

I tried. "Their" computers were the same as mine, so I tried, patiently and cheerfully, explaining to them how they work, what the readouts and flashing displays mean, and how they should probably sit out the afternoon dives and monitor themselves for symptoms of DCS. They (he, mostly) were having none of it.

Ok. I have tell this story. I was diving with two chaps and a diveguide a few weeks ago. Both of the other guys looked qualified, were very nice and said they were advanced divers so the guide said we can all do light penetration on the wreck at about 60ft, good viz etc … The younger fella had two much leg movement to maintain his boyancy but otherwise we were all fine. As we were finishing the dive, DG asked how much air, to which the older guy flashed 800, younger guy showed 1000 (1 finger on the opposite arm), I had 1300 so all was lining up, although I was surprised how little air that guy used due to his constant movement. We finished our safety stop as usual and all came up together. Well, as we found out, the younger guy came up with his gauge on a zero (complete zero) to the surface. DG asked what happened and this guy said he got mixed up on hand signals (they were clearly reviewed in the briefing) and flashed 1000 when he had 100 left. DG did not say anything to him, but I was curious what gives. What he said was kind of scary and entertaining at the same time. “I thought the air gauge was like a fuel gauge in a car, when it shows empty, you can still go for a while”…

Did you suggest they spend the afternoon monitoring for symptoms of DCS?
