I know OSHA is trying to crack down on any job that requires diving including golf ball diving and hull scrubbing. I think it's kind of silly, but what do I know.

I'm pretty sure the guy who died in the tank wouldn't have thought them "silly."

And golf ball diving and hull scrubbing is a lot more dangerous than it sounds (animals, poisoning, electrocution, drowning, being run over, trapped, etc.)

OSHA Requires a stand by diver to be dressed and ready to lend emergency assistance, and a diving supervisor on scene if a dive is to preformed on SCUBA. Comms are not required but the diver is to be tended by a line to the surface.

Regardless of rules, the guy in the tank deserved at least the same level of supervision that certified divers get. Not getting in to the solo diver thing, OW divers are supposed to have a buddy. A second guy in the tank could have turned a fatality into something interesting to discuss over lunch.

flots.

Your talking about a newspaper in the center of the commercial diving world. I bet most of the comments are by working divers that typically sneer and look down at any scuba diver. Scuba is also not considered a safe and realistic tool in the offshore diving industry.

.

Actually, I read most of the posts yesterday and most of them seemed like scuba divers saying stuff like "broke number 1 rule, don't dive alone". Stuff like that.

By the way, that's not the number 1 rule of scuba diving.

If he had my experience he would have.

I will...
A recreational OW diver certification does not prepare a diver to dive solo.
The OSHA regs clearly state...
"Each dive team member shall have the experience or training necessary to perform assigned tasks in a safe and healthful manner."
That means the company that put this boy in that tank was either criminally negligent, or at the very least violating OSHA regs.

At the very least? Ron is going to lose everything he has and everything he ever will have. As it should be.

Number 1 rule is Anyone can call a dive at any time for any reason. And it is non-negotiable. Number 2 rule is Don't hold your breath.

At least in the circles i'm in.
