Very sad. The snorkel reference is puzzling.

(Sure hope this does not lead to more FQAS "recommendations".)

That has to be poor journalism. This one says he was on scuba: " Scuba diver drowns in Morrison's Quarry in western Quebec - Ottawa - CBC News

Police say a 53-year-old scuba diver drowned in western Quebec in an area that is also known as a popular bungee jumping destination.
Police in the Outaouais say the diver drowned in the icy waters on Sunday afternoon.
It is not clear why the man was in the water, but he went under and never came back up.
Morrison's Quarry is home to the Great Canadian Bungee Corporation and it's known as a popular spot for divers.
Police are now investigating.

Very poor reporting. "it's not clear what he was doing in the water"

Sad and tragic that this happened to him and his buddies. The reporting is terribly irresponsible under the circumstances.

In previous years some free divers have gone in through the hole the scuba divers use and pose as models for underwater photography shots for the scuba divers at this time of year. I have no idea what happened yesterday, but that scenario is the only one that fits the news report.

Our LDS has a FB page and a member of that group was actually there when this happened and he said that it was not snorkeling nor was it free diver. He saw the body and all his diving gear was on. He doesn't know what actually happen.

Still very sad and it seems to hit harder when its local... :-(

"Liking" Dan's post seems in poor taste, but it occurred to me last night that it actually could have been someone either free-diving, or possibly even a "safety free-diver" hanging in the hole, using a snorkel. Although, an under-ice free-diving safety diver does seem like a cruel oxymoron.

"Liking" Dan's post seems in poor taste...

Poor taste in what sense? Someone that was actually there and saw it from his own eye with all the gear on. All we are saying is that the local media seems to be all over and being very familiar with the quarry since I go there petty often, I surely know that snorkeling would not be it.

There was some problem near the plane. They were three and two "buddies" came out, not followed by their partner.

The plane is a few hundred feet from the exit, when there is an ice cover it's like diving in a cave. There is no evidence that the

proper diving protocols were followed. No equipment redundancy and probably a lack of overhead training. Add to that the very

cold water temperature to add to the complexity of the mission.

Sad day for the people at the quarry, let's hope the Morrissons will keep the place opened in the winter for competent divers.
