No, DAN is "secondary" coverage even for re-compession. DAN requires you to file a claim with you health insurance and they will pay what is not covered by them. Of course they will cover 100% if you have no other coverage but most divers _do_ already have some health coverage. My policy with Blue Cross will cover any and all treament for any injury world wide except for a $10.00 co-pay. So If I ever have to go to a chamber DAN would be out allof $10.00

READ the DAN policy. They specifically require you to file a claim with your _other_ insurance company. So you can't "just let DAN handle it"

Sounds like you have a great policy but do you realize how many ppl dont have any health insurance? Myself included. Dan is a good deal for most ppl.

My whole point was I didn't read all the terms in the policy. My Fault.
I started this policy 3 years ago and I don't recall things being written out as clear as they are now. I didn't go back and check on anything I just renewed the policy.
My health insurance covers everything world wide but the co-pays so is it worth the exrtra money to carry the coverage if I don't need it. For me
it's not worth it. Then I have to ask myself what are the chances of me ever needing it and givin the hoops you'll have to jump through to recover your loss do I want it.
All I can say is read all the info and ask all the questions before you spend your money. Don't assume your covered just because you have DAN.
I'm willing to bet that alot of you went and read the terms after reading this thread.
Which is a good thing.

Yup. You're right about that. Leaving for Coz in about a week, and this thread made me re-read my Master coverage. Thanks, Fred!

Most insurance has different copays. Mine is $10 for doctor, $250 for ER, $1000 for overnight admission to the hospital, etc.

I have DAN insurance because the Canadian medical system is a joke

From my understanding, you would be completely covered by the canadian medical system for proper treatment.

If you think the canadian system is bad, then I doubt you've had a serious problem. Sure you wait in line if you have a non-life-threatening problem, but they get their a$s in gear for anything else.

However, if you travel outside Canada, having insurance would probably be worth it.

Even with all the crankiness this was a good post for me, it sent me to check if my insurance covered a diving accident. I forgot I knew to check any sport. Paying yearly fees for unused services (like I’ve never needed my auto insurance) can be a quandary for us lower income folks trying to trim expenses - so to play more. I was just debating DAN’s value. In reading the policy I still have questions and will call with several scenarios and check if I understand correctly. Thanks for the triggers.
from fgray1 I started adding up all the co-pays I have to make now and all together it comes to around $1000.
One thing to figure into the picture is how much was paid for the incident by insurance. Currently I’m racking up the co-pays (for a non-diving reason and why I have the time to read so much here) and stressing financially. Every time I look at what my insurance paid…thank you Jesus for insurance. I think I’m going to go for the DAN, for the secondary coverage.
My question BTW is about the 50 mile from residence thing, lotta good diving within 50 miles.

Need to review my "reguar" coverage... Although I work for an Insurance company (to remain nameless).. the coverage keeps going down every year.

The "added" coverage from DAN is exactly that... additional coverage.

Yes, this serves as a good reminder to read your policies (all of them) and know what you have..

Lets see DUKE University.. ongoing research and study of Divers profiles and recompression chamber treatments. Give money to that cause or eat 90 snickers bars this year... decsions decsions.

They even give me some sort of insurance or something for the money I donate to the project, I hear. I have BCBS PPO which is the best policy that I have even heard of at this price let alone, to buy for myself. Free for me and $50.00/monthly for the whole family.

I would flip the one hundred bucks to DAN every year just to help them along. I give to the NRA, the United Way, American Red Cross, BSA and my favorite donation every year.. BUYING GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!! Yummyyy

Why debate $100 (preferred) of additional dive insurance that covers a diver for a year? I think it is well worth the plan and peace of mind. Afterall, diving is an expensive, gear intensive hobby / activity that requires resources...so why the debate over a $100 of diver coverage that could be there for you in an emergency? Think of the costs (both economic and personal) if a diver did not have the additional coverage.

First and foremost: plan the dive and dive the plan...be a safe diver. I have been a DAN member for 11 years now and I think their coverage and related research, information and diver support are outstanding benefits.

For those that are on a restrictive budget...think of NOT diving, or find a more fuel efficient vehicle, or don't buy snacks, or skip going out...pay off those credit cards and save, save, save. We Americans are the worst savers passing the burden of credit card debt on down one generation after another.

Just think of the future costs associated with not having the additional diver coverage when it is really needed.

Just my 02.

Good reminder for me to re-read my PADI policy. I only expect to be covered if I have to ride in a chamber. When I did my first insurance research - the PADI plan was better in my opinion than the DAN policy. The differences were relatively small and it is the job of insurance companies to do everything they possibly can to avoid paying a claim. An unfortunate nature of the beast. Of course when they are selling you the coverage - it's great piece of mind - you do not have to worry about costs (that's what insurance is for right?) ;)
