At the DM level:

Performing the 20 Basic Scuba Skills From the PADI Skill Evaluation:

After demonstrating a 4 or 5 for mask removal and replacement, candidates are ready to apply demonstration principles to the 20 basic scuba skills listed below.

A skill demonstrated at the 3 level is adequate for someone to learn from, so it isn’t necessary to require a level of 4 or 5 on all skills. However, the goal of this exercise is to teach candidates how they can make their skills even more effective as teaching tools by striving for the 4 and 5 levels.

Note: While a few 3s are acceptable, candidates must earn 4s and 5s on several skills to be successful. All 3s earns only 54 points.

Procedure: Have candidates perform the 20 skills listed on the Skill Evaluation Cue Card or Skill Development Score Sheet. Grade them according to the scoring criteria. As necessary, perform the skills for candidates in a demonstration quality manner until they earn at least 68 total points, with no individual score below 3.

The mask removal and replacement skill must be repeated during this portion of the exercise.

By the end of Part Two, the candidate must demonstrate the 20 basic dive skills, with all skills earning a 3 or higher, and the total score for all 20 skills at least 68 points.

Hope this helped demystify things a bit.

SubMariner once bubbled...

To my knowledge Reg Recovery IS NOT on the list for the PADI Skill Circuit. I copied the list directly from my Digital Instructor Manual and just pasted it right into my msg.

Regulator recovery is in the performance requirements for the first confined water dive (in the overview, 4th item). We were made to learn demonstrating it for DM but it's not in the book. I'm not sure why not.

What else is required besides the 20 skills. I assume that there are number of quizzes and written tests. And what are the swimming test requirements? I think I was told 800 m in 15 min? Treat water for 15 min with hands above head for the last two? Can anyone correct me here?

Beside the 20 skills you need to:

1- 400 yard swim.
under 6 min 5 points
6-8 min 4 points
8-10 min 3 points
10-12 min 2 points
more than 12 min 1 point

2- 15 minutes tread with hands (not arms) out of the water during last 2 minutes.

3- 800 yard snorkel swim
under 13 min 5 points
13-15 min 4 points
15-17 min 3 points
17-19 min 2 points
more than 19 min 1point

4- 100 yard inert diver tow
under 2 min 5 points
2-3 min 4points
3-4 min 3 points
4-5 min 2 points
more than 5 min 1 point

There are no passing scores for any single exercise, but a combined of 12 or more is required prior to certification.

I do not know the score for the 20 skills, but the candidate was required to score for all 18 skills at least 63 points.

There are 8 exams
1- physics
2- physiology and first aid
3- equipment
4- decompression theory and the RDP
5- dive skills and the environment
6- supervising activities for certified divers
7- supervising students in training
8- padi divemaster conducted programs.

answer all the knowledge reviews

each divemaster candidate must complete an energency assistance plan for a dive site.

mapping project

conduct a simulated or acual PADI discover snorkeling, scuba review, or discover local diving program.

I hope that helped.

Thanks Washow88. Yes, it cleared a lot up. Seems like you have to average 3 on the swimming tests.

I think I heard some DMs talking about a full equipment exchange while buddy breathing, but I didn't see that in the 20 skills either. Is that still required?

S-L-O-W and exagerated. Making it look easy. Are you going to an IDC right after your DM certification?
