Not to contradict Marg, but IMO it depends on the length of your stay and how much you will be diving. My first dive trip to Cozumel (my first dives after certification) I went on a night dive, but I was there for two weeks and diving nearly every day. I went on a night dive the next to last night I was there, and I was pretty comfortable by that time.

OF course and have no reluctance to contradict me! Others will have different perspectives and no one person's opinion is necessarily "right". That is just my perspective. I had about 50 dives before I even did my AOW and my first night dive and probably another one or two hundred dives after that before I did my next night dive! I was definitely on the uncomfortable side of the equation!

The night dive we did was pretty shallow, almost right outside the Caletta Marina entry point. We had our own DM and while we had our own lights, which were the size of small flashlights, we also used the shops lights which had better switches. (The same size and no charge. we used our lights as backups) We received a more extensive dive briefing including signaling under water and light etiquette and over we went. You go in with about 10 to 15 minutes of light left, get to the bottom and get comfortable. Then the magic happens, as the light fades, the colors begin to change, almost more vivid in your dive light, and there were eels, sea snakes, octopus and different fish everywhere. You focus more on what is in your light instead of almost being overwhelmed by everything there is to see on a day dive. You focus on the details exposed by your light more.

After 50 minutes or so, I'm usually ready to end a dive but I was wishing I would have had unlimited air on that one. My wife had less than 10 dives at that point. I had less than 20. We had 4 dives with Blue Magic by that point so they were aware of our abilities underwater. I think we were not deeper than 40 feet because the dive lasted almost an hour. Had it been deeper, there is no way I could have done it on an 80.

I dont want want to hijack the thread on dive ops, but we felt safe, and it was hands down the best dive out of 9 dives while we were there. If you can imagine the first time you went under and were able to breathe....it's like that but even better. My computer is back lit, my wife's computer is too. We were always within 10 feet of our divemaster and it's actually easier to get someone attention with your light than during a day dive. My wife was a little nervous but after 10 minutes was having more fun than I was. The dive went off just like a shallow day dive, but we probably "shadowed" the DM a little closer.

we went with Blue Magic and our divemmaster was Eddie. If I were an octopus, I'd give them 8 thumbs up. Can't wait to get back for another, it will be mandatory on every dive trip from here on out if offered.

Well said MMM.

I was very comfortable with this night dive on our first ocean trip(4 months after getting our C cards). However, it was the 13th dive of the trip and we had done 2 fresh water night dives at home and loved them. Everyone has different perspectives and different past experiences that impact their level of comfort.

I like to hide my light, wave my arm, and see the water light up with the disturbed bioluminesce.

We were pretty quick to do AOW and a night dive. I guess it depend on how comfortable you are diving and just being in the dark when not diving. And first time night divers often do that twilight thing where you hit the water before the light dies and it gets dark on you while under water. Night dives are so cool and I don't manage to do enough of them.

I'll just add that if there is a moon out it's not that dark on a night dive. I had a few misgivings before my first night dive but they were soon dispelled once we were in the water.

Thank you all, I really appreciate all of your input! I think I'm set for diving. I'm going with Aldora.

Now, I need to look for snorkeling tour and all inclusive beach for my girl. haha
