Looking for some advice- we're a family of 4 (kids are 18 and 20) and looking to do a vacation in the first 2 weeks of 2026. My wife and I can't just sit on a beach so we thought doing a diving vacation would be fun. I have my PADI cert, others don't so we'd be using part of our vacation for their shore and open water dives. I'd likely do a refresher and maybe snorkel while they do the course. I think they'd likely do the online eLearning prior to the trip.

Looking for hotel and dive shop recommendations. It would be nice if the hotel had rooms with 2 bedrooms but we could also do 2 separate rooms (kids and parents). It doesn't need to be low budget but also not looking for top of the line hotel either. We'll want some downtime from diving and my daughter would enjoy a hotel with a pool/beach. We also like to get out of a hotel restaurant and get some local food so proximity to other dining would be nice.

While it will be exciting to do some great diving, the goal is to get certified, get comfortable with diving, see some cool stuff and have fun.

I welcome any suggestions and thank you!!

I've never stayed at Blue Angel, but would second this suggestion and also suggest Casa Del Mar for some of the same reasons. Also, personally, I wouldn't dive with Blue Angel. It's not because they aren't a good dive op, I'm certain that they are. I wouldn't dive with Casa Del Mar's dive shop for the same reasons I wouldn't dive with Blue Angel's. They aren't bad options, they're just not what I'm looking for.
What is it that you want in a dive op that Blue Angel does not offer? lI have been staying at what is now Blue Angel since it was La Perla many years ago; my attachment is to the hotel. I dive with the op there for convenience's sake, but they have always treated me well and delivered great dives. What else is it that you are looking for? I am not being a shill for the op; I am just curious. What have I been missing?

PM me if you are not comfortable talking about it on the open forum.

You're not missing anything. I simply have a personal preference. I have no problem discussing it in an open forum.

It sounds like what you want is supplied perfectly well by Blue Angel's dive op. By and large, I prefer to dive with a non-house dive operation. I don't think there's anything wrong with well run in-house dive ops. From what I've read and as I stated, I think Blue Angel's dive op is a good op and for some people it's a great choice. I've been diving with in-house dive operations in other locations and the vibe isn't for me.

I would also suspect that there's probably a big difference between Blue Angel's in-house dive op, Blue Angel, and their operations, and Aqua Safari at the Cozumel Palace. Never been diving with them either, but if I had to make a choice, I'd choose Blue Angel due to the what seems to be a size difference, and maybe the operational differences, from what I've read here over the years about both places. Additionally, I know someone that dove with Safari and didn't have good things to report when we talked about it. He/they loved the Palace.

If I had to dive with Blue Angel, my world would not end.

I know people who've stayed at, and did their diving with, Blue Angel. I know they'd be more comfortable diving with the Blue Angel dive op than diving with me and the way I dive. They were very happy with their stay and with the dive operation. Based only from what I've read and what was reported to me, I suspect they wouldn't have been as happy at Aqua Safari, even though the Coz Palace is very nice.

It may just be a false perception, but it has felt, to me, that there's more order, oversight and control at in-house dive ops. It feels a little bit more whistle and clipboardy. And Dry Erase boardy.

The op I dive with shows up at my dock to pick me up and I have no idea where we're going. They might let me know if the dive plan involves an up-charge due to the sites being further south, like Punta Sur, Colombia, Maracaibo etc., but we could be going anywhere. I don't care about an up-charge and they know that, so if they don't let me know, it's not a big deal. I am specifically notified if the boat is beginners, day trip divers or divers doing their first dives with the op. They know I'm fine with that too, but they assume I want to be on the advanced boat(s) if there is one. When I'm on one of those boats, it's usually in the afternoon or it's a seating/boat arrangement thing and they know I'm flexible. Flapping and flailing? No problem, I can deal. I'm just happy I'm diving.

Also, whether I'm staying at Casa Del Mar or if I were staying at Blue Angel, I'd just as soon dive with the op I've been diving with hundreds of times. I assume that Blue Angel has dive lockers close to the pier and that they'd let me use one if I'm staying there.

I'm pretty sure you understand, there's room for everybody and all tastes on Cozumel. For reasons that many would consider obvious, I probably wouldn't choose to stay north of town if most of my diving was going to be in the marine park. On the other hand, it sounds like one of the house-ops up there does some amount of northern shallow diving. I wouldn't mind a week of that one bit and would "suffer" diving with the in-house op if the opportunity or strong desire arose.

For some, staying at an AI far south, diving with the in-house op and never leaving the resort is a perfect choice. That wouldn't be for me. It doesn't mean it's bad or wrong for them.

If doing E learning before hand you are looking at 3 days (confined + open + open) of classes. If not doing e-learning you are looking at 4 days of training. That eats your vacation time.

Do as much training at home as possible.

Now it may be high priority to find a Dive Op that has a good instructor or a place that your dive shop of choice can perform the 1st day of open 1 on site. That is doing all the skills check (buoyancy, mask, reg clearing...).

Big sand beach is hard to find on Cozumel. Most require water shoes and those that don't you shoukd probably still wear.

AI vs non AI (legal drinking age is 18)? Good food at AI (limited choices) or just OK? Big places (more chances for teens to meet) or small quiet place? On site restaurant(s) or a place with a kitchen? Near town (cheap taxi) or far from town and its restaurants?

What is most important? What is a must have? You may not get everything.

What I get out of all that is that you prefer not to dive with BA because it's an in-house op; is that correct?

Although it was quite long ago I've dove with Blue Angel & well before that Aqua Safari who had & as far as I know the slowest boats of any op I've dove with. They turn a 2 tank dive trip into a long day on the water. I have nothing bad to say about BA. I have also dove with Dive Paradise a few times for different reasons including when offered a trip in the afternoon on a small fast boat heading north to see the Eagle Rays. My only complaint with them was the lack of shade on those small fast boats.
As for Dive Paradise & new divers / referral divers I have been there at least twice (one was this Feb) when they were working with young divers finishing their certifications & from what I saw they did an excellent job working with them. I watched from a short distance this last trip & thought the instructor was very thorough in their briefing & going over the gear & anything else they should know as well as making sure they were comfortable with the entire experience.
I firmly believe that as a dive op they fit the needs for this thread on the dive side of things. Whether or not the Hotel fits is up to the family looking for a good match between cost, value & proximity to town etc. Having stayed there many times over the years I can answer questions about it but it's been far too long to give much important information about the other places I've stayed on the island. The same applies to all the different dive ops I've used & friends I've made by using them. The shop I have used each trip for many years (Tres Pelicanos) is still one I can happily recommend but like many others during the Covid times there were staff changes which may be good or bad as to who I'm familiar with however Steve the owner is always someone I enjoy spending time with. I pick my dive op by who I'll be spending time with each day more than by price or size of boat etc.

You are speaking of Blue Angel, I assume?

NO. That refers to Dive Paradise. My stay at Blue Angel was in 2011 I think when Jorge (Cubano) was there. (I was talking about DP in the paragraph above there).
