I was bored tonight so I did a spur of the moment night dive at Pier 5 in Narragansett, RI along the sea wall south of the the Town Beach. It is 5 minutes from where I live and there is a lot of cobble and structure on the bottom so it makes for a great place for me to do quick night dives.

I've been mostly doing deeper boat dives with my doubles and drysuit lately so getting out with a wetsuit and a single tank for a nice relaxing shore dive was a nice change of pace. The shallows are getting pretty warm here in RI. I had between 69 and 70 degrees for the entire dive with a max depth of 20 ft.

I finally renewed my lobster license after letting it lapse back at the end of 2006. I've been mostly wreck diving and lobstering has been pretty bad around here anyway so I just didn't bother last year. I'm not generally one of those people that needs to go diving "for something" whether it be lobsters or artifacts or to take pictures or whatever. For me it is is the diving itself, the simple feeling of exploration, that is the main attraction. Still, for $40, I figured I might as well just renew it this season so I'll have the option of doing lobster dives again. Sadly, tonight was the first time this season I felt like lobstering it and I got skunked. All I saw was shorts so looks like it's hamburgers for dinner. It reminded me why I didn't even bother with the license last season. Oh well, it was a nice dive anyway.

Although the lobsters eluded me, I did see a nice big striped burrfish. It has been several years since I saw one of those around here. Pretty cool fish.

All around a nice easy relaxing dive, even if it did nothing to satisfy my nutritional requirements. :D

There is protein in that there fish that your body can break down into amino acids (the building blocks of life). Not to mention rich in omega fatty-acids and possibly nice and chewy. How dare you say no value.

:rofl3:

Chris,

Has the vis opened up around the Fort or Beavertail yet?

Chris,

Has the vis opened up around the Fort or Beavertail yet?

I've been getting spoiled by all my friends with boats so I haven't been diving there in weeks but it was about 10 ft at pier 5.

yES

Spear it with a stick, hold over a warm fire, and gnaw at it. You'll be in heaven:rofl3:

Matt and I hit beavertail lot 3 this morning. Great dive except the part where I forgot to put my weightbelt in the car and had to drive back to get it before we could dive...

So to reanswer your question, the vis was 10 to 15 ft with some small patches of 5 ft. The coldest it got was 65 at 60 ft. There were some swells so the entry and exit were a bit of work but all around a nice dive.
