What do people use to record their dives electronically and does software replace the log book?

Thanks!

I keep a logbook because I get warm fuzzies knowing there is a hardcopy somewhere. I also use software to download the dives from my computer because I also get warm fuzzies because of all the data and calculations available to me.... then I promptly copy it to my logbook to get a double dose of warm fuzzies.

Case in point... dive computer went south (without me). What do I have? Bingo, my logbook. And knowing I am getting a new computer, a.k.a. wiped clean with no dives, makes my logbook warm fuzzies justified.

So, my opinion: software to augment. Logbook for warm fuzzies.

Hi Travelpro,

I keep a log book. I fill it in soon after each dive based on the information from my computers and my acute memory of the dive. I also get stamps or stickers from the operation when it's convenient, I enjoy the memories. I also download my Dive Rite Nitek Duo using the supplied software. I augment the information in my log book, enjoy reviewing the dive profiles, and send my dive information directly to DAN for Project Dive Exploration. The short answer, I do both and find the activities complimentary.

Good diving, Craig

I transfer all data to my excel spreadsheet. Along the rows, I have date, location, time in, max depth, buddy's name, lead diver, purpose, environment, dive platform, %O2, N2, and He, starting and ending Psi's, and avg. depth. Its basic, easy to use, and covers most of what you might need to know in the future.

Diverecord.com (sometimes use the bulk upload). On a regular basis, I print a copy of the log to PDF so I have a local copy (and a backup in case the website goes down).

I record all my dive info in my logbook (hard copy) as soon as possible after the dives. I want to remember details especially noteworthy things done or seen.

I also download to my computer using Suunto Dive Manager since I have a suunto computer.

Redundancy. Just like in diving where I use a console (spg, depth gauge, compass) AND wrist computer and bottom timer.

I'm not on my laptop so I don't recall the exact software name but it is just a backup for me. My paper dive log is my primary.

Hi travelpro, I use suunto dive manager, since I have a suunto computer. You can add as many detials as you like such as gear, site, notes on the dive, buddy, dm, boat etc etc. and then I print out a hard copy and file it. I also use a memory stick as a backup. I like collecting the weird and wonderful stamps that some outfits have. These can be scanned in and printed on the log record, using photoshop or similar. It's kind of nice having a graphic profile and bar graph of tissue loading, as well as a record direct from the computer, so there is no fudging.
I have not tried any other program but DM is good, I suspect the software that comes with the computer is the most useful, as you can download directly into it, and perhaps could be a consideration when buying a dive computer. Having said that I also keep a hand written book, with the basics noted, this I fill in as soon after the dive as possible.

What software do folks use who don't have computers with upload capabilities?
I prefer to load the info from my dives by hand.
