      french polynesia is expensive thats for sure but i think its worth it, especially rangiroa and manihi in the tuamoto atolls (one hour flight from papette). you can save money in rangiroa by staying at a pension rather than a hotel, there are a couple that are close to six passengers diving co., who i highly recommend. diving taputa pass with six passengers was for me right up there with darwin and wolf island in the galapagos. we saw literally thousands of sharks, silkys, black tips, white tips, oceanic silver tips and great hammerheads. throw in giant mantas, huge schools of baracuda and the resident dolphins and one of the fastest, deepest drift dives and taputa pass is pretty much perfect.
      its harder to save money on manihi as i believe there's only one hotel but the diving is amazing, lots of mantas and sharks.
