My wife and I are currently taking the ow course. We will be flying to Key West Father's Day weekend and will be doing some diving while we are there. My question is how much does DAN insurance cost roughly?

MFSD,

There are 3 different levels of DAN insurance:
Standard: $25. Covers $45,000 per occurance
Master: $35. Covers $125,000 per occurance
Preferred: $75. Covers $250,000 per occurance

The insurance prices are for each of you, on top of the $44 family membership.

The DAN insurance is a great deal... most people never need it, but it is such a small percentage of the costs of diving, you should think twice before turning it down.

I was diving with a friend in Roatan last year, she was climbing into the dive boat in fairly heavy surge and smacked her hand with the hinged ladder... she fractured a bone in her hand, saw an orthopaedic surgeon in Honduras, then saw one when we got back to New York, had surgery and physical therapy afterwards... DAN covered it all!

And that doesn't even mention how great it would be if you needed to be evacuated to a chamber or something...

The cheapest peace of mind I ever purchased, and one of the few things I pay for and don't mind wasting!

Expect to pay about $50. Dan although 25 has another fee tacked on I think.

Dan's Prefered plan is $188 total for the 2 of you, just renewed ours. You can do it on line and if you put it on a CC it take effect immediatley.

So is this something I need to carry year round or is it something I can get on a per dive basis? I hate to sound so ignorant about this stuff, but... I JUST AM !!! This is all so new and exciting for us and with a dive trip coming up next month, we need all the help we can get.
Thank you all for your helpful hints and advise.

It's a year round policy. I'm don't know of anyone who offers a plan on a per dive basis. With that being said, I have the Master plan, and with the family membership and insuring my wife and I, it's $114 per year. Money well spent in my opinion. Compare the plans and see which one fits your needs better.

That's for a year and includes Dan's mag. The profits go to hyperbaric research and to help support the diver medical hotline so there is that added benefit. I choose the Prefered plan to get the nondiving medical. Lots of places outside the US will not accept US insurance- you pay them and you deal with your insurance company but in dive areas Dan insurance has a good enough rep that the medical facilities will accept the Dan insurance.
