That makes sense. If I get insurance in the future, I just need to reset my expectations as to the purpose.

I believe DiveAssure offers what they call a "liveaboard rider" that covers lost dives. I don't know what the exclusions are. Without the liveaboard rider or something similar, I wouldn't have expected insurance to cover ANY lost dives. I have always been under the impression that we divers take our chances with the weather preventing divers from doing as many dives as the itinerary advertised.

It is helpful in these discussions to distinguish between dive accident insurance and dive travel insurance.
They are NOT the same.

Yes that distinction is important. I was under the (wrong) impression that I had bought dive insurance when in fact I had bought travel insurance.

That's interesting about the liveaboard rider from DAN. I will have to check into that

Yes. I was just on the Dive Assure site. Their liveaboard rider apparently cover weather related dive loss

Lost Diving Days Due To:

  • Medical inability to dive.
  • Weather conditions not enabling diving/sailing.
  • Diving accident involving another passenger on the boat, causing the boat to abort the planned diving.
  • Expenses not reimbursed by the tour operator for default /mechanical breakdown to air supply.
  • Financial Default of the liveaboard operating company, or tour operator (Covered already by the Elite Plan).

Right. The question I have pondered is whether DiveAssure's Liveaboard Rider is worth it. Dives being thwarted by one unforeseen circumstance or another over the years has cost me plenty of money and time. I figure I can't insure against every possible misfortune. Besides, no amount of money can adequately compensate me for the lost enjoyment of not getting to see some spectacular reef in Indonesia.

Great point. Now that I'm a little more educated on the difference between dive insurance and travel insurance I can make a wiser decision in the future.
