Have heard ditching weights is a good way to get out of down currents in emergancies.

I have been diving warm water in a full 3mm suit, going down to 75-100ft & am now only carrying about 1.1kg (about 2.4 lbs of weight). I have no problem doing the saftey stop & love the weightlessness, but just wondering if carying more weight has a useful purpose for saftey.

Better to swim away from the reef. Ditching weights may make it hard to control your ascent after getting out of the current

I dive in the tropics, often with no weight, and don't see how carrying more weight will be safer. If you ain't got the weight, you're the same as if you took more and ditched some...........
