I recently had to share air via a buddy's octopus on a dive...told my wife (a non-diver) about it and now she is concerned I may have been exposed to TB, syphilis, AIDS, Pellagra, Halitosis, Athletes Foot...you get the picture. My question is this: Has there ever been a documented case of disease transmission from either using an Octopus reg or from Buddy Breathing from a single regulator? Thanks for the responses.

You might consider:
1/ Diving with non-infected dive buddies -- doctor's certificate of health signed immediately prior to dive
2/ Explain to spouse and other loved ones that the sort of infection that you might pick up BUDDY BREATHING -- as opposed to octo sharing -- is a hell of a lot less debilitating than drowning!

In the time that I have been diving, I have not read of, nor heard of a documented case of infection due to "buddy breathing" while diving. (First certified in the Philippines in 1972.)

Obviously, "octo" usage, or handing off of long-hose primary is always preferred, but, as was pointed out by Doppler, "buddy breathing" is always better than the alternative, at least in my humble opinion!

I am not aware of any documented case of disease transmission from an instance of reg sharing, although I can think of certain pathogens that are reasonable candidates for such communication.

Best regards.

Doppler and BigJetDriver69 hit the nail on the spot (as usual)! You may catch certain pathogens and thereby diseases (e.g. TBC) by buddy breathing and octopus-breathing (hey, who'dya think actually test-breathes those thingies before the dive ...) ...

You will drown if you don't get air (or other breathable gas) when out of it at depth ...

There are airs of the old "don't-bring-oxtoxing-people-up-from-depth-before-they-definitely-stop-convulsing"-debate here. Let's just say, drowning is often quite terminal ...
