Wow! Quite a story. Hehe, I've been thru worse, but good to share the misery, eh. You confused me on the ABL airport; where the hell is Ambler? Then I saw you meant Abiline (ABI); yeah, any safe port in a storm, but you could have been stuck in that plane at an airport without Immigration and Customs overnight if your crew got grounded. Whew! I think I would have faked a heart attack to get off then.
What time of year was that trip? DFW is really poorly located for a hub as I have seen some horrible storms blow in there, shutting down the airport instantly, one night grounding every plane caught on the ground with severe hail and totalling most unprotected cars from Ft.Worth to Dallas. I was in FW that night, drove back to the airport with a car that had no back window and could barely see thru the cracks on the front, but the agency had some good ones they'd brought in and just traded.
Houston gets storms too, but I think you're safer that way, yeah - aside from the rare Tropical Storm.
And the PDC-Coz ferry gets bumpy in storms at times, even shut down at some. Travel is its own adventure.
Gordy had the best approach: abandon the airport for a better day when you can! I've been stuck in IAH with Continental Express refusing to give us real info about delays many times - certainly not the same as the real airline, but not much choice out of Lubbock.
Good luck on future trips.

After reading this, you all have me concerned about my Jan 2011 trip. Any suggestions on an easy way to get from Bradley (BDL) to Coz?!
Delta has a non-stop flight to Cancun, but it costs more - like 50% more than changing in DFW in some cases. Check your weather forecasts for the departure, connecting, and arrival cities the night before and if anything looks iffy - call the airline to see if you can change for free. They often allow such as it helps them too; they don't want to be responsible for passengers caught in a storm. Remember the word
accommodate and use it, as it seems to have some legal meaning to them.
Airline reservations close at nights in Mexico and can be difficult to reach anyway, but if your cell phone is free in Coz or you have a laptop with Skype, just call the US number. That hint helped me a lot once escaping in advance of a summer storm.
