Dear Jbert,

I don't know why you are concerned. No matter where you fly, stuff sometimes happens but the end result is that you end up in Cozumel. My guess is that from BDL there are no direct flights to Cancun, so why worry. The worst thing that may happen is NOT TOO BAD.

Enjoy,

Dave-

You'll meet my wife when we come down. Then you'll see what I'm concerned!

I haven't looked at direct flights to Cancun. I'll check it out.

When we lived in Connecticut we flew from BDL many times. We prefer to fly right into Cozumel. Delta, American USair and a few others all have flights with connections. I have never seen a direct flight to either Cozumel or Cancun from BDL. If you are looking for that you will have to go to the NYC major area airports. Most fly direct to CUN from NYC. Continental may have a seasonal direct flight to Cozumel from Newark on Saturdays. Do not know just where in Connecticut you live but the airport in Westchester(HPN) has some great fares compared to BDL at times.
You cannot control the weather. It sometimes affects your flights. Go and enjoy your vacation in Cozumel.

This is a good read:
How to get to Cozumel
Diverken, Thanks! I'll have to look into the United runs. To late for this trip. Maybe next time.
The whole point of this story is that over the years people on this board think that flying into the island is best way to get there. My answer to that would be that it depends where you are coming from. We had a bad experience flying from CZM, with connections, and wanted to tell the story. For us flying from ORD it is better to just get to Mexico CUN or CZM Non-Stop. I just don't get the people who say the bus ferry is so terrible? There is nothing wrong with the ADO bus to ferry ride. The bus's are new, modern, safe vehicles that get you to PDC in comfort and I kind of like the ferry ride. If I can save $100-$200 USD I'm going Non-Stop to CUN for the bus ferry ride!

Wow! Quite a story. Hehe, I've been thru worse, but good to share the misery, eh. You confused me on the ABL airport; where the hell is Ambler? Then I saw you meant Abiline (ABI); yeah, any safe port in a storm, but you could have been stuck in that plane at an airport without Immigration and Customs overnight if your crew got grounded. Whew! I think I would have faked a heart attack to get off then.

What time of year was that trip? DFW is really poorly located for a hub as I have seen some horrible storms blow in there, shutting down the airport instantly, one night grounding every plane caught on the ground with severe hail and totalling most unprotected cars from Ft.Worth to Dallas. I was in FW that night, drove back to the airport with a car that had no back window and could barely see thru the cracks on the front, but the agency had some good ones they'd brought in and just traded.

Houston gets storms too, but I think you're safer that way, yeah - aside from the rare Tropical Storm.

And the PDC-Coz ferry gets bumpy in storms at times, even shut down at some. Travel is its own adventure.

Gordy had the best approach: abandon the airport for a better day when you can! I've been stuck in IAH with Continental Express refusing to give us real info about delays many times - certainly not the same as the real airline, but not much choice out of Lubbock.

Good luck on future trips. :pilot:
After reading this, you all have me concerned about my Jan 2011 trip. Any suggestions on an easy way to get from Bradley (BDL) to Coz?!
Delta has a non-stop flight to Cancun, but it costs more - like 50% more than changing in DFW in some cases. Check your weather forecasts for the departure, connecting, and arrival cities the night before and if anything looks iffy - call the airline to see if you can change for free. They often allow such as it helps them too; they don't want to be responsible for passengers caught in a storm. Remember the word accommodate and use it, as it seems to have some legal meaning to them.

Airline reservations close at nights in Mexico and can be difficult to reach anyway, but if your cell phone is free in Coz or you have a laptop with Skype, just call the US number. That hint helped me a lot once escaping in advance of a summer storm.

A few comments, Continental is running a direct (non-stop) flight from Newark to Coz on Saturdays. Good for the NYC area folks.
I went through CUN once going home, never, ever, again.
Weather can stop flights anywhere.

Again with word confusion, but I confuse easily. :silly:

Direct means that you stay on the same plane even if it makes stops; Non-stop means that you don't have to land in transit. Can make a difference in weather situations.

I think in the case of the advice given in the earlier posts, the word direct is used instead of using the proper term of non stop

Sorry for the confusion Don!

Yeah, and it's easier to type. But in weather related travel, even direct flights can have problems when the interim stop is closed - depending.

When booking online, one will see non-stop, not direct, but on the phone you can hear/say both - that they are different.

I can see the confusion I created. Corrected my last post to Non-Stop. Didn't mean to confuse people. Non-Stop is the best way to get anywhere. Anytime there has to be a connection, even if direct, there is potential for problems. I can't go back and edit posts as it has been over 24 hrs.
