Actually...there's three olympic standards....but only one that they use for the games every 4 years.
 
Anyway, the swim doesn't sound impossible - I believe I've got a few laps left in the old frame, yet.

Thanks for this info - I'm going to start thinking towards a trip to Kingston. Interesting drive, actually.
 
I could do it 20 years ago when I used to swim competitively and worked as a life guard.

As for now......

I would guess that 95+% of the general diving population could not manage a 50 yard underwater breath hold swim without fins on
 
50 yards underwater without fins on one breath is not trivial - most of the diving population would fail.

50 FEET is another matter. A lot of people will fail THAT one too, but only because they try too hard. That one is not difficult at all if you're relaxed in the water - the entire trick is to conserve your oxygen store since moving FAST through the water takes a LOT more energy (thus, oxygen) than moving at a more leisurely pace.
