Maybe I don't get out enough.
What's DIR-F?

It stands for Do It Right Fundamentals. It is a course that is offered by GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) that teaches a holistic method to diving including mindset, gear configuration, skills, and buddy awareness.

DIR is a hotly debated topic from both sides of the coin and a lot of good information is available on the board using a search of it.

I stands for the DIR Fundamentals course. DIR stand for Doing It Right-a holistic diving approach that Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) teaches. Here are some links to start you out:

There's a bunch more, but these will get you going.

...So you guys know these guys?

And they're worth it?

Jeeez...

I fully expected you guys to respond that I was being taken advantage of... I'm surprised that I'm getting the response that I am.

Man, I need to reconsider... My experience on this board thus far has been that the opinions expressed here, while I haven't always agreed with them, have, in the long run, ended up being much more "on" than I originally thought. Case in point: My posts about "eating my words" and that in my own personal quest for "the perfect rig," I'm ending up looking more and more DIR every day.

Something tells me that a $400 investment might end up saving me more than that in LDS->Ebay->DIR maneuvers alone.

Jeez, I can't believe that I'm considering this. Lemme sleep on it.

:D

You might want to follow my earlier advice about reading the class reports posted by Lost Yooper, Large Diver and myself. Three seperate classes that gave insight into exactly what goes on during a DIRF class. If you wish, I will dig up the links and post them for you.

Thanks!

I've read Large Diver's report, and I'm in the process of reading Bob's report at http://www.bayareadivers.net/wb416/reports/GueFundamentals.htm. But sure, I'll take you up on the offer for more links. Why not get as much information as possible? :D

I wrote the guy who's putting this all together... This is the same guy who wrote the email that I quoted above. Earlier tonight, I wrote to him and basically said, "Sorry, I'm not interested at that price..." After thinking about it a while, and after hearing about these guys' reputations, I wrote him again and said basically, "Hey, sorry if my email came off rudely... Maybe I should reconsider." I thought you guys would get a kick out of his response...

(Me) Jim, are these instructors Andrew "G" and Mike "K?"

(Him) The same.

(Me) Maybe I SHOULD reconsider. They've got an incredible reputation.

(Him) FYI, I was a WKPP support diver for four years. I am expecting to learn a lot from this course, and am signing up and taking the class just like everyone else.

I'm also an OW instructor, and am really looking forward to spending a whole weekend with Andrew to pick his brain on some stuff. I expect to get my money's worth and then some out of this course.

(Me) My apologies, by the way, if my previous email ("Holy cow, Jim... $400?") was offensive.

(Him) Didn't regard it as "offensive" - it made me feel a little "put out" because of how much personal effort I have put into making this course happen. I understand about the expense - diving is not a cheap hobby. I have taken classes from some great instructors (most notably JJ for my Full Cave) and they are worth their weight in gold if you can get them in for a class.

(Me) 'Guess it depends on how serious I am, hunh?

(Him) That it does :-).

-JimG

Oh, and yeah, his name's Jim. Seems like a really nice guy. :D Anyone know him?

Since he apparently WASN'T trying to rip me off (as I thought earlier) I thought it okay to bring a name into it.

Thought you guys would get a kick out of the email correspondence.

Haven't slept yet... Going now... But I got a feeling that I might have to break into the emergency account for this one. :D Jeez... And I blew all of that cash on a stupid cruise. At least I got some diving in. :D

Man, this is gonna hurt. I thought I was going to be able to get some cool gear this month...

SeaJay
Take the course and you may find that you will still get some cool gear out of it. When you cover gear configurations you'll know what I mean, as well as the logic supporting the approach taught in the class.

There are a few required pieces you will need, which you may or may not already have. You will also need to get some reading in ahead of time with the "Fundamentals" book.

Best Regards

SeaJay,

A few comments:

(1) You are paying a higher fee since Andrew and MHK are flying out from Seattle and CA, respectively.

(2) You are getting instruction from elite divers/instructors. I don't think I am exaggerating when I say it is like getting golf lessons from Tiger Woods.

$400 is a significant amount of money. At the same time -- this is high quality instruction from some of the best in the industry over 2 1/2 intensive days. When you do a cost-benefit....the LT benefits you derive from this course certainly outweigh the cost. Of course, when I tried to explain to my wife that I needed to take yet another dive course for hundreds of $$$, she was a little harder to convince ;-)

Good luck with the decision.

I'm in. I've slept on it, and decided that this class is worth the additional couple of hundred bucks that I wasn't planning on.

Something tells me that this class will do things for me that, in the long run, will very much change my entire dive style... For the better. So I've decided, very much based on y'all's recommendations, that I need this course.

To help make this feel less expensive, I'm sending the $400 to the dive shop now, and I'll spend all of my travel expenses, including two overnight stays in hotels and all of the fuel, equipment rental, food, gas, etc., later during the class. That might help this to not be so painful to my wallet.

And it might help me to focus more on the class and not what it's doing to my wallet. :D

Wish me luck, y'all. :D Assimilation's almost complete. :D (Just kidding.)
