Morning,

I have only been diving for 2 years and only recently got geared up and diving more. When I tried with SSI I was told to use their app to log my dives... however since it doesn't sync anywhere and if my phone was wiped I lose them I was wondering what I should do.

I would prefer a Digital method... interested in what people think between digital and paper logs.

And what Digital Method is best. Thanks.

Awesome Idea. Didn't think of that.

Do you have a nice Template and can that count towards things like SSI proof of Dives?

There are a number of Dive-logging software packages that will sync with the cloud, I use one that will also sync across devices, so I have copies of the log on my phone, laptop and iPad. It is easy to add a new device, so if you upgrade phones or lose a device you can replace and sync the log easily.

The software will download data from my dive computers direct so dive data is sync'd with the software.

I personally use Macdive, but other packages do the same.

Phil.

Subsurface is free and multi-platform. If you're on a Mac, I recommend MacDive.

Me too.
Digital all the way.
Dive Computer --> Smartphone/Tablet --> cloud --> anywhere ;)

I use Diver Log. Interfaces with my Oceanic computers. Happy with it.

I use Google Sheets - just like Excel, free, backed up in cloud, accessible from multiple devices, etc.
Here's what I log for each dive - Dive #, Date, Dive site, Location, Tank type and volume, Type (boat, shore, etc), Gas, Weight, Exposure protection, SI, MDL, Pre-dive pressure, Air temp, Water temp, Dive time, Average depth, Max depth, Viz, SCR, Post-dive pressure, Dive notes.
You can then parse on any number of parameters to get your dive summaries (eg, how many dives on EAN32, how many dives deeper than 100ft, etc). I'm not exactly sure what data you need when you're showing someone your dive logs but you should be able to get whatever you need.

I also keep a paper log which I use more as a scrap book (photos, dive maps, signatures, dive boat or shop stamps, etc) than for all the dive data I like to track.

For an online log I use Dive Logs - it's free and pretty. Can add photos, link to video and map references.

To get the data up there, I transfer it from my computer (Aeris A300 CS) to my PC using Diving Log 6.0 (not free for the fully functional version), add in any detail that the computer can't provide (eg. location, dive buddy, weather conditions, notes about the dive, etc) and at the touch of a button sync the data from Diving Log on the PC to Dive Logs online.
